Manchester, N.H. (October 4)-The Saint Anselm
College women's soccer team was upended by nationally ranked Saint
Rose 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field in NE-10 action. The
loss makes the Hawks 3-6-2 on the year, and 2-3-2 in conference,
while the victory improves the Golden Knights to 7-3-1 overall and
5-2-1 in the NE-10.
The Golden Knights, who came into today ranked 25th in Division
II, started the scoring when Katie Whiting
(Holden,
Mass.) scored off of a free kick
past Hawk keeper Michaela Smith (Andover, Mass.)
just inside the box in the games 15th minute.
The scoring quickly picked up at the start of the second half
when Golden Knight forward Kailey Egbert
(Camp Hill,
Penn.) took a rebound from
teammate Christina Cuffari (Brick, N.J.) to put
Saint Rose up 2-0. Less than forty seconds later, Teresa
Vercollone (Pembroke,
Mass.) took a lead pass from
Mary Kate Heavey
(Medfield,
Mass.) and put it past Golden
Knights keeper Shannon Murphy
(Charlton,
Mass.) to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the games 68th minute, Saint Rose extended their lead when
Cuffari's corner was headed in by Jordan Bowers
(Colorado Springs,
Colo.) to make it 3-1. Seven
minutes later, Jennifer Pearl
(Stoughton,
Mass.) put a good boot on a
corner that was headed in by Hawk defender Kathleen
Kennerly (Weymouth,
Mass.) to cut the lead to 3-2.
Thirty seconds later, Kaitlyn
Berry (Monument,
Colo.) scored on a free kick just
outside of the box to put the game out of reach and a 4-2 final.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, October 8th, as they will
travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on American
International College at 4 p.m.
