Manchester, N.H. (October 15)-- The Saint
Anselm women's soccer team, led by Heidi Reece's (Salem,
N.Y.) two-goal performance, defeated Bentley College 5-1
Wednesday afternoon at Melucci Field.
The Hawks fired first as Reece put the Hawks on the board after
she took the rebound off a shot from Jennifer Pearl
(Stoughton,
Mass.) that clanked off the post
and put it past Falcon keeper Kara Smith
(West Springfield,
Mass.) to make it 1-0 Hawks.
Saint Anselm goalie Michaela Smith
(Andover,
Mass.) had one save in the first
half.
In the second half the Falcons struck first, when senior forward
Tara Petitto
(Wakefield,
Mass.) stole the ball from the
Saint Anselm defenders and put it past Michaela Smith to tie the
game at one.
After that it was all Hawks, as Reece nodded her second goal of
the game when she took a lead pass from junior defender
Michele Dickson
(Manchester,
N.H.) and beat Kara Smith to give
the hawks the lead 2-1. Two minutes later, Kathleen
Kennerly (Weymouth,
Mass.) put a good boot on a free
kick, and Mary Kate Heavey
(Medfield,
Mass.) scored her 5th goal of the
season to make it 3-1 Hawks.
In the games 71st minute, Dickson took a shot from 15 yards
outside of the box and put it in over Kara Smith's head to make it
4-1. Four minutes later, Kennerly notched her 3rd goal of the
season off a corner from Pearl for the 5-1 conference victory.
Hawks goalkeeper Jacqueline Cooney
(Braintree,
Mass.) made one save in relief of
Michaela Smith in the second half, while Falcon goalie Kara Smith
finished the game with eight saves.
The win makes the Hawks 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in conference
play, while the Falcons drop to 3-11-1 on the year and 1-8-1 in
NE-10 play.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, October 18th, as they will
host Le Moyne College at noon.
