Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hawks Soar Past Setters 6-2

Briarcliff, N.Y. (October 11)-- The Saint Anselm women's soccer team defeated Pace University 6-2 in NE-10 play Saturday afternoon. Saint Anselm scored four unanswered goals in the second half, to win their first road conference match of the season. The victory improves the Hawks to 4-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in NE-10 play, while the loss drops the Setters to  2-9-0 on the year and 2-8-0 in conference play.

Saint Anselm got on the board first in the 12th minute when senior Michelle Nuzzo (Dedham, Mass.) headed home the rebound off a shot that clanked off the crossbar to give The Hawks a 1-0 lead. That was all the scoring in the 1st half as Saint Anselm keeper Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) kept the setters scoreless by setting aside 2 shots in the opening stanza.

Pace came right out of the gate in the 2nd half to tie up the game 1-1 when freshman Mariah Darrah (Newburgh, NY) headed home a cross from fellow freshman Allyson Dyl (Kearny, NJ).

The Hawks wasted no time taking back the lead in the 50th minute when sophomore Jennifer Pearl (Stoughton, Mass.) fired a shot by Setter goalie Breanna Gault (Oneonta, NY) to give Saint Anselm a 2-1 lead.

The Setters came right back with an answer of their own in the 57th minute when Dyl received a pass from Darrah and pushed it past Cooney knotting the game back up at 2-2.

Saint Anselm would put the game away however when forward Mary Kate Heavey (Medfield, Mass) received a pass from Heidi Reece (Salem, N.Y.) and slid it by Gault in the 69th minute giving Saint Anselm a 3-2 lead.

The Hawks put the game well out of reach with three more unanswered goals in the last 20 minutes of the game including two by Bethany Dunn (Plymouth, Mass.) and one by Pearl to put away the Setters for a 6-2 final.

Saint Anselm hits the fields again on Wednesday, October 15th, as they will host Bentley College for a conference match at 4 p.m.
