Winchendon, Mass. (January 9) -- The men's
hockey team edged out Northeast-10 opponent Franklin Pierce, 6-5,
Wednesday evening at the Winchendon School Ice Arena. Six different
Hawks scored in the game, giving the Hawks their third straight
victory. The win improves the Hawks to 5-1-3 overall, 2-0-0
Northeast-10, while the loss drops Franklin Pierce to 4-10-0, 0-3-0
Northeast-10.
The Hawks struck first, late in the first period. Tom
Kerwin (Whitman, Mass.) scored at the 13:25 mark on the
power play, assisted by Mike Nunzianto (Guilford,
Conn.) and Matt Grazioso (Quincy, Mass.).
The Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
The Hawks extended the lead to 4-1 in the second period.
Colin Fitzpatrick (Westwood, Mass.) netted his
fourth goal of the season on the power play at the 6:37 mark,
assisted by Pat Forshner (Natick, Mass.) and
Brian Hartigan (Saugus, Mass.). Ryan
Butler (Arlington, Mass.) continued his strong play in the
past few games with a goal at the 9:40 mark to extend the lead to
3-0, assisted by Nunzianto. John Hennessey (Westwood,
Mass.) scored at the 10:28 mark, assisted by Mike
Foley (Medford, Mass.) to push the lead to 4-0 halfway
through the period.
The Ravens cut the lead to three on a 5-on-3 advantage late in
the second period, as Joseph Fields scored with
just 20 seconds remaining in the period, assisted by Peter
Wilson and Eric Spalt.
The Ravens then took advantage of the 5-on-4 to open the third
period, cutting the lead to 4-2 at the 1:22 mark, when Spalt picked
up his first goal of the season. Franklin Pierce added its third
straight unanswered goal at the 5:06 mark, as Wilson scored,
assisted by Jeff Kasper and Fields, bringing the
Ravens to within one.
The Hawks responded at the 7:30 mark, when Forshner scored his
fifth goal of the season, assisted by Nick Wheeler (Nashua,
N.H.) and Kerwin. Shane Masotta (Woburn,
Mass.) scored his first goal of the season at the 8:16
mark, assisted by Fitzpatrick and Foley, to give the Hawks a 6-3
advantage with just over half a period left to play.
The Ravens took advantage of a power play with just under five
minutes left to play, as Ryan Strayer found the
back of the net, assisted by Wilson and Phil
LaBreck. Franklin Pierce then cut the lead to one when
Fields scored his second goal of the game at the 19:00 mark,
assisted by the goaltender, Jeremy Rossignolo. The
Ravens then pulled Rossignolo after the center-ice faceoff for the
remaining 58 seconds of the game, but did not net the equalizer,
allowing the Hawks to finish off their third straight win.
The Hawks return to the ice Friday, January 11th, traveling to
Colby for a 1 p.m. start.
