Manchester, N.H. (January 4) -- The men's
hockey team defeated Johnson & Wales, 6-3, Friday night at
Sullivan Arena. The non-conference win improves the Hawks to 3-1-3,
while the loss drops the Wildcats to 4-8.
Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.) scored his first
collegiate goal at the 5:12 mark, assisted by Tom Kerwin
(Whitman, Mass.), beating Johnson & Wales goaltender,
Charlie Bacon (Hudson, Mass.), over the right
shoulder to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. The Hawks added a
second goal when Chris MacPhee (Windham, N.H.)
scored at the 14:14 mark, assisted by Ryan Butler
(Arlington, Mass.) and Mike Nunzianto (Guilford,
Conn.).
The Wildcats responded late in the first period, scoring two
goals in less than two minutes. Kevin Marchesi (South
Portland, Maine) found the back of the net at the 17:15
mark, assisted by Ryan Jacobs (Derby,
Vt.) and Matt McGilvray (Rochester,
N.H.). Craig Houle (Burrilville, R.I.)
scored the Wildcats' second goal on the power play, assisted by
McGilvray and Jon Madsen (Somers, Conn.), at the
19:13 mark, tying the score at two apiece heading into the first
intermission.
Pat Forshner (Natick, Mass.) scored his fourth
goal of the season at the 3:16 mark in the second period on the
breakaway, giving the Hawks a 3-2 lead. Brian Hartigan
(Saugus, Mass.) picked up the assist. Snell added his
second goal of the game to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead at the 18:15
mark finding the lower left corner of the net through traffic,
assisted by MacPhee. The Hawks led the Wildcats 4-2 heading into
the second intermission.
The Hawks picked up a quick goal to start the third period, as
Colin Fitzpatrick (Westwood, Mass.) scored just 39
seconds into the period, assisted by John Hennessey
(Westwood, Mass.) and Mike Foley (Medford,
Mass.), pushing the Hawks' lead to 5-2. Foley picked up a
goal of his own at the 11:10 mark off the rebound making the
Hawks' lead 6-2, assisted by Fitzpatrick.
Johnson & Wales brought it back to within three at the 6:36
mark, when Mike O'Malley (Woonsocket, R.I.) scored
on a 5-on-3, assisted by Houle, but the Wildcats came up short,
falling 6-3.
Jason Zuck (Clifton, N.J.) made 19 saves
in the win, while Bacon made 30 saves in the loss.
The Hawks return to the ice Sunday for a rematch of today's
match-up, hosting Johnson & Wales at 3 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
