Worcester, Mass. (September 8) -- The Hawks
outlasted the Assumption Greyhounds 3-2 in a Northeast-10 see-saw
battle. The win improves the Hawks to 2-3-1 overall, 1-2
NE-10, while the loss drops Assumption to 1-5 overall, 0-3 NE-10.
The Hawks jumped on top quickly, scoring just 2:11 into the
game. Jon Cournoyer (N. Granby, Conn.)
buried a pass off the head of Sam Lamptey (Worcester,
Mass.) into the left corner, putting the Hawks up
1-0.
Assumption refused to give in, and after almost 20 minutes of
scoreless play, the Greyhounds got on the board with a penalty kick
goal from Paul Murphy, his third goal of the
season, at the 22:05 mark. Assumption then took the lead late
in the first half, as Jeffrey Swan buried a shot
in the right corner off a pass from Stephen
Blaisdell. The goal was Swan's second of the season,
giving the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead over the Hawks at halftime.
The Hawks stunned Assumption coming out strong in the second
half, scoring two goals only 4:01 apart from each other.
Jon Cournoyer added his second goal of the game
off a free kick pass from Tim Hubbard (Marshfield,
Mass.) at the 51:37 mark evening the score at 2-2.
Hubbard added to his assist by scoring his third
goal of the season at the 55:38 mark, assisted by Sam
Lamptey, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Hawks.
The Hawks held onto the 3-2 lead, winning their first conference
game of the season.
The Hawks play next when the team heads to Holy Family (Pa.) for
a non-conference match-up on Saturday, September 15. Game
time is set for 12:00 p.m.
