Manchester, N.H. (September 6) -- On Thursday
afternoon, the Saint Anselm women's soccer team defeated the
University of Bridgeport by a 2-1 final in non-conference
action at Melucci Field.
At the 16:54 mark, the Hawks took a 1-0 advantage when
Bethany Dunn (Plymouth, Mass.) scored her first
goal of the season. Saint Anselm increased its lead with 15:43 left
in the opening half when Catherine Bruce (Lebanon,
Conn.) tallied her first goal of the season and the Hawks
held a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Bridgeport closed to within 2-1 at the 75:47 mark when
Sofia Hoflin found the back of the net for her
second goal of the season. The Purple Knights had a number of
quality scoring chances in the closing minutes, but the Hawks held
them off for the victory.
Freshman Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.)
made seven saves, while UB netminder Elina
Yletyinen made three saves for the visitors.
Saint Anselm improves to 3-2-0 overall, while Bridgeport falls
to 2-3-0 overall on the season. The Hawks are back in action on
Saturday, September 8th when the team travels to Assumption for a
Northeast-10 game beginning at 2 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
Bridgeport returns to action on Sunday, September 9th when the
Purple Knights host Queens College at 1 p.m. in its ECC
opener.
