Manchester, N.H. (September 29) -- On Saturday
afternoon at the annual Homecoming Game, the Saint Anselm football
team dropped a 41-13 final to C.W. Post in Northeast-10
Conference play.
C.W. Post capitalized on a Saint Anselm fumble on the first play
from scrimmage and connected on a 30-yard touchdown pass to
Chris Bone (Inwood, N.Y.) from Nick
Georgetti (Holbrook, N.Y.) just 23 seconds into the
first quarter. Bone added to the scoring with 26 seconds left in
the first half when he hauled in a 24-yard pass for his second TD
of the game. The Pioneers extended the lead with 8:59 left in the
second quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run from Anthony
Lazarus (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) before the Hawks
answered with a pair of scores.
With 6:34 left in the half, Conor Cahill (Salem,
Mass.) pulled down a 32-yard touchdown pass from
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) to cut the lead to
21-6. The Hawks forced a C.W. Post fumble on the next possession
and punched it for another score on an eight-yard TD pass to
Ryan Drago (Plymouth, Mass.). The Pioneers
rebounded quickly though with a 38-yard scoring strike to Bone with
3:03 remaining in the half as the teams went to halftime 27-13 in
favor of C.W. Post.
The third quarter nearly ended as a scoreless period before
Lazarus busted through the Saint Anselm defense with 3:10 left in
the period for a 48-yard TD run and a 34-13 lead. The visitors
extended the lead to 41-13 with 10:40 remaining on a four-yard TD
by junior Paul Jennings (Jamaica, N.Y.) for his
first touchdown of the season.
For Saint Anselm, Barese ended the game 19-of-35 for 162 yards
and two touchdowns, while Cahill led the team on the ground with 57
yards on 17 carries. Senior wide receiver Corey Williams
(Billerica, Mass.) finished with a team-high 73 yards on
five receptions. Defensively, junior Brian Tormollan
(Waterville, Maine) led the team with eight total
tackles. Senior All-America candidate Casey Larson
(Pascoag, R.I.) finished with seven tackles, including
three tackles for a loss and one sack.
For the Pioneers, Georgetti ended the day 11-for-15 for 235
yards and three touchdowns. Bone was on the receiving end of all
three scores as he pulled down seven passes for 145 yards. Lazarus
was a monster on the ground for C.W. Post as he posted a 187-yard
afternoon on 21 carries.
With the loss, the Hawks are now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in
Northeast-10 play, while C.W. Post improves to 2-2 overall and 2-1
in league play. Saint Anselm is back in action next Saturday,
October 6th, as the Hawks travel to Stonehill for a 1 p.m. start in
Easton, Mass.
