Easton, Mass. (October 6) -- In the Second
Annual Hawk Classic on Saturday afternoon, the Saint Anselm
football team fell to Stonehill by a 56-7 final at W.B. Mason
Stadium. The all-time series now stands at 5-4 in favor of Saint
Anselm.
The teams started slow in the first 10 minutes before Stonehill
running back Jeffrey Payne (West Haven, Conn.)
scored on a three-yard TD rush with 4:58 left. The Skyhawks struck
again with 1:04 left in the first period when David Pringle
(West Haven, Conn.) hauled in a 67-yard touchdown
from Cruz Parsons (Signal Hill, Calif.) for a
14-0 advantage. Payne added two more touchdown runs, along
with a 28-yard TD reception by Eddie Vachon (Newton,
Mass.), to take a 35-0 lead into the halftime break.
Stonehill continued its offensive display early in the third
quarters on a rushing TD by Parsons following a Saint Anselm
fumble, followed by another rushing score by Vachon for a 49-0 lead
with 6:43 left in the third quarter. Vachon added his third
touchdown of the day in the closing moments of the third quarter
and the Skyhawks held a 56-0 lead with 2:32 on the clock. Saint
Anselm got on the board in the final minute of the game as junior
Conor Cahill (Danvers, Mass.) scored his third
touchdown of the season with 42 seconds left on a three-yard
touchdown leap to account for the 56-7 final.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the
Northeast-10, while Stonehill is now 4-1 overall and a perfect 4-0
in league play. Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, October
13th when the Hawks travel to Merrimack for the Second Annual
Merrimack River Shootout.
