Manchester, N.H. (September 22) -- The men's
soccer team upset ninth ranked Merrimack 2-1 in overtime on
Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field. The win improves the
Hawks to 4-4-1 overall, 2-3-0 Northeast-10, while the loss drops
Merrimack to 8-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 Northeast-10.
The Hawks played Merrimack to a 0-0 tie through a foul-ridden
first half. The Hawks recorded two yellow cards and 12 fouls,
while Merrimack recorded one yellow card and five fouls.
Merrimack jumped on the board first, as Boris
Senic recorded his second goal of the season in the 53rd
minute, scoring off a free kick just outside the Hawks' penalty
area.
The Hawks responded in the 72nd minute, as D.J. Travers
(Hopkinton, N.H.) netted his first goal of the
season. Sam Lamptey (Worcester,
Mass.) touched the ball to Travers after a
Richard Simmonds (Hooksett, N.H.) free kick
into Merrimack's penalty area.
The score remained tied after regulation, sending the teams into
overtime. After only 58 seconds of overtime, Rob
Thatcher (Topsfield, Mass.) was fouled inside Merrimack's
penalty area, awarding the Hawks a penalty kick.
Thatcher converted on the penalty kick, giving the Hawks a 2-1
victory.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 25, heading to
Bryant for a 7:00 p.m. start.
