Manchester, N.H. (September 2) - The Saint
Anselm Hawks narrowly defeated the Caldwell College Cougars 2-1 in
double overtime at Melucci Field Sunday afternoon. The win improves
the Hawks to 1-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 NE-10, and drops Caldwell to
0-1-1 overall, 0-0-0 CACC.
Both teams came out in the first half aggressively, with Saint
Anselm taking 10 shots, only one on net, and Caldwell taking five,
four of which were stopped by Hawks' goalkeeper Scott
Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.). Johnson finished the game with
seven saves.
The Hawks' only shot on net in the first half resulted in the
first goal of the game. Tim Hubbard (Marshfield,
Mass.) took a blast from 25 yards out just past the
outstretched hands of Cougars' goalkeeper John
Plaugic, netting his second goal of the season. The goal
was assisted by Matt Sawyer (Henniker, N.H.), his
second of the season, at the 19:40 mark.
The Cougars netted an equalizer at the 32:26 mark, when
Chad Bennett buried a pass from Luis
Sartorio.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the second half, but
neither managed to score, sending the game into overtime tied 1-1.
The Hawks' best opportunity in the first overtime came when
Tim Hubbard rang the crossbar in the 97th
minute.
In the second overtime, the Hawks managed to net the winner when
Sam Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.) netted his third
goal of the season at the 106:12 mark with Rob Thatcher
(Topsfield, Mass.) and Matt Sawyer being
credited with the dual assist.
The Hawks begin a stretch of three road games Wednesday, Sept.
5, when they head to Southern New Hampshire for their second
conference game of the season. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
