The Game:Â Saturday's game matches Saint Anselm against the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Grappone Stadium.
Saturday's game will be the season finale for both teams with the Hawks honoring 10 players who are in their senior seasons academically.
Saint Anselm enters the game reeling after a pair of big losses. The Hawks are 4-5 overall, 3-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The team has lost four straight and five of its last six, however, following a crisp 3-0 start to the campaign. The last three losses have been particularly tough with the team dropping a 28-21 double overtime game at Bryant before big losses against Bentley and SCSU. After entering Week Eight with one of the nation's top defense, the Hawks have allowed 104 combined points to the Falcons and Owls.
American Int'l enters Saturday's game moving in a different direction with wins in three of the team's last four games. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a commanding 33-6 win over Stonehill last weekend.
Home Boys:Â The Hawks will be looking to defend a pair of long standing records at home. The team has never had a losing season at Grappone Stadium and enter Saturday with a 2-2 mark this season. The team is also undefeated all-time on Senior Day with a perfect 5-0 mark.
Series History:Â American Int'l leads the all-time series, 4-3. In a series that resumed in 2001 following a 60-year hiatus, it is the Yellow Jackets who have taken control with a 3-0 mark against the Hawks.
Two of those wins have come at Grappone Stadium including a 28-10 win last season. In that game, AIC's Marlon Beckles ran for 122 yards on 18 carries and his team benefitted from four Saint Anselm turnovers to win going away.
Inside The Numbers: Three weeks ago, the Hawks led the NE-10 in pass defense. Now, that same defense is ranked last in the conference after faltering against the league's two best passing teams in Bentley and SCSU. AIC would like to take advantage, but the Yellow Jackets are missing star QB Tom Guy who graduated last year. Now Ian Richardson is at the helm. Richardson, a transfer from Mississippi Valley State, is averaging just 98.9 yards of offense through the air on a team now built around the running game of Beckles. Beckles is averaging over 91 yards per game rushing but he has had difficulty finding paydirt with just three rushing touchdowns.
The Hawks allowed a 100-yard rusher last weekend for the first time this season as SCSU's Kofi Wilson ran for 128 yards with his Owls totaling 267 ground yards. Outside of that game, the Hawks have been one of the nation's toughest run defenses, making for an interesting matchup against the Jackets.
Each team has had problems with turnovers, with the Hawks coughing up the ball an NE-10 high 41 times this season including a league-high 27 interceptions. Both numbers are dubious school records as well. The Yellow Jackets are even on the season in terms of turnover ratio but the team has lost 17 fumbles, second most in the league.
Penalties could also play a role on Saturday with the Hawks being flagged a league-low 52 times compared to AIC's 79 penalties, second highest in the NE-10.
Saint Anselm:Â The Hawks will be without star DEÂ David Heiner, who suffered a knee injury during the third quarter last weekend. Still, their defense features several key player who have led the squad to single season records for sacks (45), interceptions (16), and tackles for a loss (106). The Hawks lead the NE-10 with those 45 sacks.
SAC Pack:Â The defense which has seen 21 different players record at least one tackle for a loss, 13 different players record at least one sack, and 16 different players involved in a turnover.
Nothing Could Be Finer:Â Before suffering his knee injury,. Heiner added his name to the school's record books with three tackles against the Owls. He recorded one sack, giving him 15.0 for the season (14.0 solo) to add to his single season and career marks (23.5). He finished the game with two tackles for a loss giving him a record 25.5 on the season and 38.5 for his career, third best all-time at the school.
Sunny Days: Junior S Brian Sundell recorded seven tackles (five solo) last weekend. He enters Saturday with 90 total tackles, and needs two to set the school's single season record. He also leads the Hawks with three interceptions and three forced fumbles.
More Garcarz: Despite being sidelined for much of the game with a leg injury, sophomore WR/K Michael Garcarz set the school's single season receiving mark with 50. He also holds single game records for receptions (16) and receiving yards (158).... Garcarz ranks fifth in the NE-10 Conference in points per game (7.8), third in receptions per game (5.6), and fourth in receiving yards per game (66.4).
He also holds the conference's longest successful FG try this year, at 38 yards accomplished both against Stonehill and against Bentley this past weekend.
Everybody Loves Raymond: Sophomore WR Matt Raymond set a personal best with five catches for 34 yards in his first career start last week at SCSU.
Movie Classics: Junior WR Kevin Lukas has caught 25 passes for 410 yards and three touchdowns so far this season to emerge as a legitimate deep threat. His 15.2 yards per reception average ranks second all-time to the 15,5 Kevin L'Ecuyer averaged in 1999.
AIC:Â The Yellow Jackets are keyed by Beckles, who is second in the NE-10 with 730 rushing yards and 91.2 per game this season... Richardson, while not wracking up the yardage through the air, is completing over 50-percent of his passes and is third in the league with a passer rating of over 150.
On defense, Henry Rafferty is a solid presence at linebacker. He is eighth in the league with 64 total tackles (38 solo). He also performs the team's kicking duties.
