Football Hosts Pace on Senior Day

11/14/2003 12:00:00 AM

The Game: Saint Anselm returns to Grappone Stadium on Saturday with a Northeast-10 Conference game against the Setters of Pace University on Senior Day. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 PM.

Saint Anselm is coming off its second straight win, a 10-3 decision over Bryant last weekend. The Hawks bring a 2-7 overall record into the game.

Pace comes into Saturday's game with a 2-7 overall record, 2-6 in the conference. The Setters have lost three of their last four games, including a 59-0 setback to league-leading Bentley last weekend.

This will be the second straight visit to Grappone Stadium for the Setters, whom have not hosted the Hawks since October 6, 2001.

Series History: Each team has won two games in the all-time series, but the Hawks have taken each of the last two meetings, including a 31-0 whitewashing last season. The game marked the first and only shutout in the program's modern era. In its two wins, the Hawks have averaged 37 points per game against just 10 for the Setters. Last year's game was played in a steady downpour, and the Hawks forced seven fumbles with six turnovers. Kevin Ridgley ran for 98 yards and Derek DiMartino rushed for 93 yards as the Hawks chewed up 210 yards on the ground. James Ward led the defense with 13 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles.

Inside The Numbers: Saturday's game is a matchup of two teams that rank among the bottom four in both scoring offense and scoring defense in the NE-10. Something will have to give on the ground as the Setters' offense (143 yards per game) will go up against a Hawk team that has allowed an average of just 101.5 yards and 2.4 yards per attempt in its last two games.

Saint Anselm has run for at least 126 yards in each of the last two games after only having one 100-yard outing in its seven prior games (107 at Assumption). A healthy DiMartino has been the reason, rushing for 100 yards in all three of those games

The Hawk passing game has yet to come together this season, with the team throwing for more than 200 yards just once. Pace has not been able to get pressure on opposing QBs however, with just 11 sacks on the season.

Conversely, the Hawks have recorded 28 sacks as a team (third in the NE-10), which is one shy of the team's single season mark set last year. That could prove trouble for a Pace team that is last in the NE-10 with 36 sacks allowed.

Pace: Pace is coming off a 59-0 loss to Bentley. The team fell behind 45-0 at halftime, committed five turnovers and netted under 200 yards of offense. Pace will be playing its first road game since October 11, a string of four games. The Setters only won one of those four home games however, and the road has not been a friend either to the team, with their lone win coming at Assumption on October 4. The Setters are led offensively by Wendell Fevrine, who is fifth in the NE-10 with 909 all-purpose yards, 559 of them coming on kickoff returns. His 23.3 return average leads the league. Linebacker Kevin Vradenburg is second in the NE-10 with 86 total tackles.

Saint Anselm: The Hawks' defense dominated last week, holding run-happy Bryant College to just 107 rushing yards on 39 carries, 143 total yards, allowing just 2-of-15 third down conversions and forcing four turnovers. After Bryant scored its only points of the day, a field goal with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Hawk defense allowed just eight more yards on six drives and 19 plays while intercepting a pair of passes inside its own red zone.

Home Boys: The Hawks will be looking to defend a pair of long standing records at home. The team has never had a losing season at Grappone Stadium The team is also undefeated all-time on Senior Day with two wins over both Stonehill and Southern Conn. St.

Weathering The Weather: While getting off to slow starts in the warm months, Saint Anselm has traditionally been a terror in the latter part of the season. The Hawks are 7-2 in November games all-time. With Saturday's game still outstanding, the Hawks are 11-3 in the final three games of a season, 13-6 over the final four, 16-8 in their final five, and 19-10 over their final six games of a season.

More DiMartino: Derek DiMartino set a single game record with 37 carries for a workmanlike 119 yards and the game's lone touchdown last week. He has now run for 100 yards on three occasions and is just 17 carries shy of a single season record. He has nine touchdowns this season, as well as all eight of the team's rushing TDs.

Ward's World: James Ward leads the team in tackles (81), TFLs (14.5), sacks (5.0-tied), forced fumbles (4), and is second with three interceptions. He is fourth in the league in tackles per game 9.0 and is ten shy of tying the school's single season record... The player right in front of Ward in tackles per game is teammate Brian Sundell, who averages 9.1 per game with 64 tackles in seven games.

DeMasi's Mark: Junior cornerback Michael DeMasi recorded his team-leading fifth interception of the season Saturday, expanding his school record to 11 for his career. His five interceptions is one shy of his own record, set last year. His 142 interception return yards leads the NE-10.

Show Me Some Leg: Freshman kicker Michael Garcarz was just 1-for-3 on field goal attempts in bad weather last week but still managed to set the school's single season record for made FGs (9), and attempts (14). He leads the NE-10 in both categories.
