The Game:Â After a bye week, Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday with the Hawks traveling to Brookville, N.Y. for the Northeast-10 Conference Game of the Week on Teamline Radio against the Pioneers of C.W. Post. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM at Warrior Field.
Saint Anselm comes into the game at 0-6, marking the first time in program history that the Hawks have lost six straight to start a season. Two weeks ago, the Hawks surrendered three scores to the Merrimack defense and special teams in a 38-17 loss in N. Andover, Mass.
An announced crowd of 3,523 saw C.W. Post churn out a 20-7 win over Bryant last week to keep the Pioneers' hope live for a piece of the NE-10 season crown. The team has now won four straight games since a 32-28 loss to Bentley on September 19.
Series History:Â C.W. Post has dominated the series, winning all three games by a combined score of 155-21. Saint Anselm has only had a lead for a total of 22:48, and that came in the first meeting in 2000 when the Hawks scored at the 9:13 mark of the first quarter and held CWP off until 1:25 to play in the second quarter.
Inside The Numbers:Â The numbers are staggering across the board in the three-game history between these two teams. CWP has outgained the Hawks by an average of 425 yards to 149 yards, with Saint Anselm failing to gain positive numbers on the ground in any game. The Hawks have been held to a combined minus -38 rushing yards in the three contests.
Contributing to that number are 15 sacks allowed by Saint Anselm, compared to just seven by the Pioneers' offensive line.
Miscues and big plays have continued to be a main factor in the Hawks' winless start to the 2003 season. The Hawks have allowed 13 scoring plays of 35 yards or more, and have allowed nine scores to opposing defense and special teams units. In stark contrast, C.W. Post has allowed just four scoring plays of at least 35 yards and three of those came against Division I-AA Fordham in the opening week. The Pioneers have also scored five defensive touchdowns so far.
Northeast-Nine:Â Times have changed in the Northeast-10 Conference as they are with one less team at the start of the 2003 season after the University of Massachusetts-Lowell dropped its football program at the conclusion of last season.
As a result, Saint Anselm will play a non-conference game for the first time since the 2000 season in which the Hawks had a pair of non-league games. The Hawks will travel to Division I-AA member Siena College in November. The two last met in that same 2000 season, with the Hawks taking a 20-16 win.
C.W. Post:Â CWP is allowing a league-low 17.9 points per game and are second in rushing offense at 184.0 YPG. The Pioneers are once again the most penalized team in the league however at 107 YPG.
WR Jeremiah Pope has been the big play threat this season and is third among NE-10 wideouts with 41 catches for 637 yards and five TDs. He is a three-way threat and leads the NE-10 in all-purpose yards with over 180 per game coming on 220 rush, 637 receiving, and 404 returning.
Saint Anselm:Â After starting with just seven yards of offense in the first quarter against Merrimack, and giving up 31 straight points to start the game, Saint Anselm got its offense in gear and outgained the Warriors, 319-167, including 201-84 in the second half. The damage was done however with Merrimack registering a two-yard blocked punt for a touchdown, an eight-yard fumble return for a score, a 58-yard interception return for a score, and an interception in its own end zone.
Defense:Â The Hawks' defense turned things around in the second half, recording season-highs of 12 quarterback hurries, four sacks, and nine tackles for a loss against Merrimack.
Bombarding Ball Carriers: Sophomore Mike Bombardier made a career-high 12 stops (seven solo) against Merrimack.
All-Around Effort: Junior DB Aaron Jeanson had 11 tackles (10 assisted) and five tackles for loss against Merrimack, while adding 121 total yards on two punt and four kickoff returns.
Trenchmen: Thomas Kelleher led a disruptive front line against MC, and was credited with a career-high four QB hurries. Meanwhile Junior DE David Heiner also had a big day with six tackles, 2.5 sacks, two QB hurries and two forced fumbles.
In the Spotlight AGEN: Quarterback Shane Dinagen set career-highs in pass attempts (41), completions (18), yards (220), and touchdown passes (2).
Sore Score: Although hampered by a hamstring injury all season long, running back Derek DiMartino has found the end zone six times (five rush, one pass) to rank second in the NE-10 in scoring.
Ward's World: Senior captain James Ward is seventh in the NE-10 in tackles with 51 (25 solo). He has 7.0 TFL, 3.0 sacks, and three interceptions.
Bye A Win:Â Saint Anselm is 0-2 this season against teams coming off a bye week (Stonehill, Merrimack), and 0-2 against teams celebrating Homecoming (SCSU, Merrimack). The Hawks are 1-3 all-time against teams coming in after a bye week.
Cashing In:Â Although the red zone stats have not translated into wins, the Hawks have been solid on both sides of the ball there this season. On offense, the team is 10-for-11 (six TDs, four FGs, 1 INT). On defense, the Hawks have also played well, allowing 15 scores on 25 possessions with five takeaways and three four-down stops.
Show Me Some Leg: Freshman kicker Mike Garcarz is tied for the NE-10 lead with five field goals, and is second in percentage at 5-for-7. His two misses have come from distances of 47 and 52 yards. He also took over the punting duties two weeks ago and averaged 32.6 yards per punt.
