Michael Sciamanna was hired to lead the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse program on July 28, 2015 and is now in his seventh season as the team's head coach in 2022.
Since his hire, the Hawks have proven themselves to be one of the most consistent programs in the Northeast. Inheriting a program that posted a 2-11 record in 2015, Saint Anselm has since made four consecutive NE10 postseason appearances, starting with an 8-6 record in the 2016 season. Under his direction, the Hawks have become regulars in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Coaches' Poll and began the 2018 season as the No. 13 team in the nation, its highest-ever rank to begin a season.
With Sciamanna's guidance, Saint Anselm posted a 13-2 overall record in 2021 and was ranked as high as No. 8 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's National Coaches' Poll. The Hawks played for a Northeast-10 Conference postseason championship for just the second time (2018, 2021) and claimed the team's first Northeast Division Regular Season Championship with an unblemished 10-0 record. Saint Anselm earned an At-Large bid to the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship, downing No. 5-ranked Seton Hill in First Round action for the program's first NCAA postseason win.
In the magical 2021 campaign, Sciamanna and the Hawks roster produced the nation's Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Outstanding National Goalkeeper of the Year and four total USILA All-America selections. Nine student-athletes earned All-Region honors and two earned USILA Scholar All-America recognition for their efforts in the classroom.
In the shortened 2020 season, Sciamanna and the Hawks finished with a 3-0 record, picking up two victories over nationally-regarded programs. Saint Anselm logged a season-opening win over No. 18-ranked New York Tech to crack the USILA national coaches' poll. After an overtime victory against Florida Tech next time out, the Hawks handed Georgian Court, a team receiving votes in the national poll, a convincing 15-6 defeat. The Hawks finished the season ranked as high as No. 18 in NCAA Division II and through three games posted the nation's best clearing percentage (0.938) and was one of only 11 teams in the division without a defeat.
In 2019, Saint Anselm finished the year ranked 20th in all of NCAA Division II in the final coaches' poll released by the USILA. The Hawks earned a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference postseason with a 6-5 mark against league opponents, the fourth consecutive postseason appearance for the Hawks under Sciamanna. The team played an arduous schedule, taking on seven opponents mentioned in the USILA Coaches' Poll in 2019. Five members of the Hawks roster earned All-Conference honors and as many student-athletes were selected to New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-New England Teams.
The 2018 campaign was a breakout one for men's lacrosse on the Hilltop as the Hawks, ranked 17th in NCAA Division II by the USILA at season's end, posted an 11-5 overall record. The 11 wins were the most in one year against Division II opponents and the Hawks also secured their first-ever win against the nation's top-ranked team, defeating Le Moyne in the NE10 Semifinals. The Hawks also posted the nation's 15th-best scoring offense (12.63) and scoring defense (8.38), ranking 18th overall in points per game (19.31). The squad set the program record in goals scored (202) and tallied 309 points (202-107=309) as a team, the second-most in a single season.
In his first season, Sciamanna guided the Hawks to their first winning season since 2012 with an overall record of 8-6, which culminated in the team's seventh postseason appearance in the last 10 seasons. Saint Anselm earned the No. 6 seed in the NE-10 Tournament and fell 13-7 at third-seeded and eighth-ranked Adelphi. The Hawks equaled their record of 8-6 in his second season while improving to 7-4 against league opponents in 2017.
Sciamanna arrived on the Hilltop following eight years as an assistant coach with the Endicott College men's lacrosse program. Sciamanna helped guide the Gulls to a 121-44 (.733) overall record that included five 15-win seasons during his tenure.
While at Endicott, Sciamanna served as the offensive, ride and clear coordinator, in addition to being responsible for scouting opponents, planning practices, recruiting, community outreach and community service.
During Sciamanna's tenure, the Gulls were nationally ranked in each of the eight years, captured three Commonwealth Coast Conference titles (2010, 2011, 2015) and made four NCAA Tournament appearances (2010, 2011, 2014, 2015). Sciamanna's offense was ranked in the top-10 in the country in goals scored in 2011, 2014 and 2015, in addition to producing seven of the program's top-10 single-game goal outputs. The Gulls also posted a win over top-ranked Tufts in 2011.
Sciamanna played his college lacrosse at the Division I level for three years. Sciamanna began his career at Wagner College, where he started all but one game in two seasons. He led the Seahawks in scoring in both 2004 and 2005 and set the program's single-season assist record in '05. Sciamanna then transferred to the University of Massachusetts for the 2006 campaign and was part of a run to the 2006 National Championship game and UMass' first team to make the Final Four in school history.
Sciamanna earned his Bachelor's degree in communications from UMass in 2008 and then received his Master's degree in athletic administration from Endicott in 2010.
Sciamanna is also the director of the Elite 100 Camp. He currently resides in North Andover, Mass. with his wife, Heather, daughter, Reese, born in October 2018, and son Zachary, born in December 2020.
