Softball Closes Out Regular Season with Sweep Over American Int’l

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College softball team swept a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at American International College on Saturday afternoon, earning a 10-1 victory in six innings in game one before completing the sweep with a 7-0 win in the nightcap at Judy Groff Field to close out the regular season.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 10 (23-28, 15-20 NE10), American International 1 (14-33, 10-25 NE10) – 6 inn.
 
Highlights 
  • Senior Kendra Lee improved to 13-10 in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing four hits and one earned run with four walks and one strikeout.
  • Senior Rose Reitmeyer led the offense, going 3-4 with a home run, a double, and six runs batted in. Her six RBI in a single game is tied for the third-most in program history.
  • Sophomore Katie Fox scored three runs and drove in one, drawing three walks. Fox finished the regular season with the most walks drawn in the NE10 with 32, also setting the Hawks' single-season program record.
  • Junior Caitlyn Duquette finished 2-4 with one RBI, while classmate Abby Wrinn went 1-4 with one RBI.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia had a 1-3 day with a double, and junior Sarah Cipriani scored twice while adding a hit.
How it Happened
Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the first inning as Wrinn delivered an RBI single to bring home Fox for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Hawks broke the game open in the second, plating four runs. Tardugno drove in a run with a groundout before Reitmeyer delivered a two-run double. Duquette later reached on an error that allowed another run to score, extending the lead to 5-0.
 
After a scoreless stretch through the middle innings, Saint Anselm added insurance in the sixth. Fox drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0 before Reitmeyer capped the inning with a grand slam to push the advantage to 10-0.
 
American International got on the board in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly, but Lee limited the damage and closed out the 10-1 victory.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 7 (24-28, 16-20 NE10), American International 0 (14-34, 10-26 NE10)
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm is now 36-50 all-time against American Int'l, going 3-1 during the regular season series against the Yellow Jackets.
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen improved to 8-9 in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
  • Reitmeyer recorded a hit and drove in two runs, as she is now up to 54 RBI on the season, tying the Hawks' single-season record.
  • Cipriani had a perfect second game, going 2-2 with two walks and one run scored.
  • Senior Lily Mason finished 1-3 with one RBI, one run scored, and one walk.
  • Sophomore Zaynah Wotkowicz added a hit and one RBI, while senior Madeline Trisket went 2-3 with a run scored.
  • Junior Brooke Tardugno drove in a run and added a stolen base.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Saint Anselm broke through in the second with four runs. Wotkowicz delivered an RBI single that plated two runs following an outfield error, Mason followed with an RBI single, and Tardugno added a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
 
The Hawks added to their advantage in the fourth as Reitmeyer delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-0.
 
Saint Anselm tacked on one more in the seventh as Duquette reached on an error and later scored on a groundout by Wotkowicz to make it 7-0.
 
Bergen handled the rest in the circle, scattering three hits and keeping American International off the scoreboard to complete the shutout victory.
