Women’s Lacrosse Races Past AIC, 25-3, to Close Out Regular Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 21 nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team capped off its regular season with a 25-3 win over American International College on Tuesday night at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

Highlights

  • 17 different Hawks recorded a point, with sophomore Ayla McDermod leading the way with six points off five goals and one assist. She added three ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.
  • Senior Brianna Fruci, junior Alyssa Hill, sophomore Lily Shea, and freshman Kendall Herrick each notched five points.
  • Senior Margaret O'Connor registered two assists and one goal for a three-point outing.
  • Junior Lucy Mawn recorded a season-high nine draw controls and three caused turnovers.
  • Mawn, senior Lucy Davis, junior Julia Rowley, sophomores Shannon Mahoney and Maddie Dugan, and freshman Ariana Nikolis each secured two points.
  • Nikolis picked up four draw controls, good for second-best on the Hawks.
  • Junior Madelin Dunbar made three stops in her first victory of the campaign.
  • Saint Anselm put 37 shots on goal compared to four by the Yellow Jackets.
  • The Hawks went a perfect 8-for-8 (100%) on clearing attempts and limited AIC to a 5-for-16 (31.3%) clearing effort.
  • The Hawks won the ground ball and draw control battles, 16-5 and 22-8, respectively.
  • Saint Anselm, winners of its last 10 matchups with AIC, now holds a 26-2 record against the Yellow Jackets in a series that dates back to the 2000 season.
  • The Hawks matched a program record 25-goal output, which was set back on March 9 of this season in a shutout win over Felician University.

How it Happened

With a pair of goals from Herrick and McDermod, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 3:06 into the contest. Saint Anselm's lead ballooned to 11 by the end of the first quarter as six separate Hawks found the back of the net in the opening 15 mintues.

The Hawks' lead grew to as large as 14-0 in the second quarter before the Yellow Jackets scored to make it a 13-goal game.

Saint Anselm scored the final four goals of the half to take an 18-1 lead at the break.

The Hawks scored the only three goals of the third quarter before outscoring the Yellow Jackets in the fourth, 4-2, to secure a 25-3 victory.

The Hawks (10-6, 5-4 NE10) secured the fifth seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship and will travel to fourth-seeded Assumption University on Saturday, April 25 for a quarterfinal-round matchup at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
