MANCHESTER, N.H. – After more than four decades on the ice and behind the bench, longtime Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey head coach Ed Seney has announced his retirement from coaching, closing the book on a remarkable 44-year career that spanned the youth, high school and collegiate levels.
A native of Lake Placid, N.Y., Seney's lifelong journey in hockey began as a young player skating in the shadows of Olympic history. That early passion grew into a distinguished coaching career that impacted hundreds of student-athletes.
Seney led the Saint Anselm program from 2002 to 2017, guiding the Hawks to more than 200 victories and seven Northeast-10 Conference postseason titles. In 2019, he was named to the Hilltop Hockey All-Time Team in recognition of his contributions to the program and the college.
A four-time NE10 Coach of the Year, Seney mentored dozens of major award winners, including two NE10 Players of the Year, eight Goaltenders of the Year, four Rookies of the Year and seven Defensive Players of the Year.
During Seney's tenure, several Saint Anselm student-athletes earned prestigious national honors. In 2010, Coleman Noonan was named a Second Team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association and became just the second in program history to win ECAC East Player of the Year. He also became the first NCAA Division II player to receive the Joe Concannon Award, given to New England's top American-born Division II/III player.
In 2013, Tucker Mullin earned the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented annually to college ice hockey's "finest citizen" for exemplary community service. Mullin co-founded the Thomas E. Smith Fight to Cure Paralysis Foundation, served as a student ambassador for Team IMPACT, and played a key role in the team's adoption of nine-year-old Benjamin Roy, who was battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Following his collegiate tenure, Seney took over as head coach at Bishop Brady High School and later played a key developmental role at Seacoast Performance Academy, where he coached U-15, U-16 and U-18 teams from 2019 to 2023.
Most recently, he led the U-18 team for the New Hampshire Mountain Kings, helping shape the next generation of elite players.
Seney began his coaching career in 1981 at New England College, shortly after completing his playing career at NEC and SUNY Plattsburgh. He later held assistant coaching positions at Norwich University and Clarkson University before taking the helm at SUNY Potsdam.
During his 14 seasons with the Bears, Seney became the program's all-time winningest coach with 169 victories. He earned three State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Coach of the Year awards and was inducted into the Potsdam Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
In total, Seney recorded 371 wins across 29 seasons as a collegiate head coach, ranking him among the top 25 all-time in NCAA Division II and III history. Yet his legacy goes far beyond wins and titles with players frequently credit him with instilling lifelong values of discipline, humility and leadership, both on and off the ice.
