Softball Finishes Off Win Over SCSU on Wotkowicz Walk-Off

HOOKSETT, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team completed its game against Southern Connecticut State (SCSU) on Tuesday evening with a thrilling walk-off win. The Hawks held a 3-1 edge when the game was halted due to weather last week, but the Owls quickly jumped in front to take a 4-3 lead. After tying the game in the sixth, the Hawks walked it off in the seventh thanks to the heroics of freshman Zaynah Wotkowicz (Hampton Falls, N.H.), who ripped an RBI double to center field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Prior to the game being halted last Tuesday, sophomore pitcher Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) got off to a solid start for Saint Anselm. After allowing two runners to get on base, Lee struck out a pair to get out of the jam with the game still scoreless.
  • SCSU was able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Cassidy Sullivan led off with a single and eventually made her way to third before scoring on an error for the opening run of the game. Saint Anselm loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to score as senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) lined out to second.
  • The Hawks responded in the bottom of the third as senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) drew walks to get things started. That duo later scored after a two-out, two-run triple down the left field line by junior Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.), who also scored on a wild pitch that put the Hawks in front, 3-1.
  • After the Owls went down in order in the top of the fourth, the game was halted at the South Athletic Fields due to heavy rain. A week later, the game resumed in the bottom of the fourth at Penmen Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire.
  • The first runs scored after resuming the game from the rain-out came from the Owls, who retook the lead in the fifth on a three-run home run by Olivia Young.
  • The Hawks clawed back in the sixth to tie the game. Mason stayed hot at the plate with a leadoff single, and she touched home on a double by sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.), making it 4-4.
  • After a scoreless top of the seventh, Reitmeyer drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half to put the winning run on base. Senior Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move sophomore pinch-runner Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.) into scoring position, and Wotkowicz took advantage by driving a double into center field to give Saint Anselm a 5-4 walk-off win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Saint Anselm scored their five runs on four hits, with three of them being extra-base hits. They drew nine walks in the contest and left seven runners aboard.
  • SCSU scored four runs and also had four hits in the game. They drew five walks and left five runners on base.
  • Lee started in the circle for the Hawks and tossed five full innings. She allowed three hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters.
  • Sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) picked up the win for Saint Anselm after pitching two innings in relief to finish the game. She allowed only one hit and one walk while also recording a strikeout.
  • Mason was a huge contributor for the Hawks, driving in two runs while coming around to score two runs of her own. It was her first career game with multiple hits, multiple runs scored, and multiple runs batted in.
  • Reitmeyer drew three walks in the winning effort, the most in a single game by a Hawk this season.
  • This marked the 31st meeting between SCSU and Saint Anselm, with the Hawks improving to 17-14 in the series. Saint Anselm extended their series win streak to six games, the longest win streak by either team since their first meeting in 2004.
