Dean Notches First Collegiate Hat Trick as #5 Men's Lacrosse Improves to 7-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Charlie Dean (North Andover, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate hat trick as the nationally ranked #5 Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team came away with a 15-8 win over Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) action on Wednesday night. The Hawks remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in NE10 play with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sebastian Simonson opened the scoring a little over two minutes in to give Saint Michael's a 1-0 advantage.
  • Saint Anselm responded with two straight goals, one from Dean and one from sophomore Mark Boyle (Reading, Mass.), as the Hawks jumped in front, 2-1.
  • Simonson tied it up for the Purple Knights with his second goal of the quarter, but the Hawks scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead into the second. Dean and Boyle scored their second goals of the night, while junior Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.) scored on an extra man opportunity and sophomore long stick midfielder Nate Johnson (Reading, Mass.) notched his first career goal.
  • The visitors tacked on two more scores within the opening two minutes of the second. Freshman Matt Lemay (Westminster, Mass.) scored for the sixth straight game and Dean followed with his third goal as the Hawks increased their lead to 8-2.
  • Matthew Frawley ended the 13-minute scoring drought for Saint Michael's with a goal to cut the deficit to 8-3.
  • Saint Anselm answered with two more goals in the final six minutes of the half to take a 10-3 lead at the intermission. Seniors Will Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) and Joe Lombardi (Holliston, Mass.) both found the back of the net during that stretch for the Hawks.
  • Andrews opened the second half with his second tally of the game, and Lemay added his second as well less than two minutes later as the Saint Anselm offense continued to attack with success, extending the lead to 12-3.
  • The Purple Knights were able to strike twice in the last five minutes of the third quarter with Sean Murphy and Ethan Drake each scoring, but sophomore Thomas Driscoll (Medford, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal as the Hawks took a 13-5 edge into the fourth.
  • Saint Michael's outscored Saint Anselm in the final period, 3-2, but the deficit proved to be insurmountable. Senior Colin Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) scored the final two goals of the night for the Hawks to help seal the 15-8 road victory.
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm dominated with a 44-26 advantage in total shots and a 31-17 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks also controlled the center circle with an 18-8 lead on faceoffs. Junior Quinn Gannon (Scituate, Mass.) led the Hawks with a new career-high of 17 faceoff wins. He went 17-24 (70.8%) at the faceoff X.
  • Saint Anselm nearly doubled up Saint Michael's in the ground ball battle, 38-20. Gannon snagged a career-best and team-high 12 ground balls to lead the Hawks.
  • The Purple Knights committed 14 turnovers in the game compared to 11 committed by the Hawks. Defensively, the Purple Knights defense caused six of those turnovers, while the Hawks defense caused eight giveaways.
  • Saint Anselm was nearly perfect on clear attempts and went 17-18 (94.4%). Saint Michael's went 20-23 on clear attempts (86.9%).
  • There were three penalties called in the game, two of which were called on the Purple Knights. The Hawks went 1-2 on extra man opportunities, while the Purple Knights went 1-1.
  • Dean scored a game-high three goals for his first collegiate hat trick. Three other student-athletes finished with three-point games for Saint Anselm: Boyle (two goals, one assist), Claflin (one goal, two assists) and Mulvey (two goals, one assist).
  • Andrews and Lemay each scored twice in the contest for the Hawks. Andrews has scored two goals in his last two outings, while Lemay recorded his sixth straight multi-goal game. Lemay is leading the team with 16 goals and 24 points this season.
  • Simonson and Christian Reyes each scored twice to lead Saint Michael's. Reyes also added two assists for a game-high four points.
  • Sophomore goaltender Finn Granara (Reading, Mass.) made nine saves and posted a .563 save percentage in his 11th career win between the pipes for the Hawks.
  • Sean Regan made 16 saves and allowed all 15 goals in the loss for the Purple Knights.
  • This marked the 36th all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm improves to 17-19 overall against Saint Michael's in the series that began in 1994.
