Pitching Dominates in Softball's Sweep of New Haven

MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm softball rode strong pitching performances to sweep their doubleheader against New Haven. The Hawks opened with a 5-0 win in game one behind a complete-game shutout from sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.). Sophomore Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) followed with a dominant one-hitter in game two, leading the Hawks to a 9-1 victory in six innings.

 


 

UP NEXT:

  • Softball will host Southern Connecticut State for a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15th, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM in game one and 4:00 PM in game two.


 

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) opened the scoring in the second inning, reaching on a single, stealing second, and coming around to score on a fielder's choice.

  • In the fifth, Tardugno added to the lead with a sacrifice fly that brought home sophomore Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.), making it 2-0.

  • After back-to-back singles by sophomore Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) and junior Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.), junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) launched a three-run home run over the center field wall to push the lead to 5-0.

  • Sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) shut the door in the final frame, stranding runners on first and second to secure the Hawks' 5-0 win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1): 

 
  • This marked the 25th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and New Haven, with the Hawks improving to 11-14 in the series. It was also the fourth straight win for the Hawks over the Chargers.

  • Sam Ryan earned her 11th win of the season—second-most in the NE10—after pitching a complete game. She allowed six hits and struck out two over seven shutout innings.

  • Rose Reitmeyer hit her third home run of the season and now leads the team in RBIs with 22, tied for sixth in the NE10.

  • All five runs scored by Saint Anselm came from different players, highlighting a well-balanced offensive effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • The Chargers opened the scoring with a double steal in the second inning—Brianna Trueman swiped second while Bella Chenet stole home on the throw.

  • Saint Anselm answered in the third when senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) launched a two-run homer, bringing in sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.), who had singled earlier in the inning.

  • Wiberg stayed hot at the plate in the fifth, singling home senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) to extend the lead to 3-1.

  • The Hawks closed the game early in the sixth with a six-run outburst. Sophomore Sarah Cipriani (Woodbury, Conn.) drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. Tardugno followed with a two-run single before scoring on a hit by Arsenault. Senior Alyssa Wironen then brought home Arsenault and junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) to secure the 9-1 win via the run rule.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2): 

  • This was the 26th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and New Haven, with the Hawks improving to 12-14 in the series. The win marked the fifth straight for Saint Anselm—their longest streak in the series.

  • Sophomore Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) earned the win in the circle, tossing six strong innings while allowing just one hit and one earned run, striking out two.

  • Senior Sam Wiberg hit her first home run of the season—and the fifth of her career—in the victory. She currently ranks fifth in the NE10 with a .394 batting average.

  • The Hawks' offense was firing on all cylinders, with five players recording multi-hit games and all nine starters registering a hit.

  • Brooke Tardugno stole two bases in the doubleheader, giving her 25 on the season—good for first in the NE10. She now sits just seven steals shy of the single-season program record of 32 with 12 regular season games remaining. 

  • Audrey Arsenault also swiped a base, moving into second in the conference with 23 steals.

  • As a team, the Hawks have recorded 72 stolen bases—first in the NE10 and ten more than any other team in the conference. They are now just 17 steals away from breaking the single-season program record of 89, set by the 2018 team.
