Arsenault's Pair of Homers Powers Softball to Split at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, VT – Saint Anselm softball split their road doubleheader with Saint Michael's for the second time this season. The Purple Knights pulled away in game one with a four-run second inning en route to a 7-2 victory. In game two, the Hawks were powered by a pair of home runs from senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) and held on for a 3-2 win to close out the afternoon.

  • Softball will host New Haven for a home doubleheader on Monday, April 14th, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 PM in game one and 4:30 PM in game two.


 

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) reached base with a walk in the top of the first, stole second, and scored the game's first run on a single by senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.).

  • The Hawks extended their lead in the second as junior Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) brought home sophomore Caitlyn Duquette (Bedford, N.H.) with a groundout—Duquette had doubled earlier in the inning.

  • Saint Michael's answered with a four-run second inning, beginning with a bases-loaded walk to Brooke Edgerly. CJ Davidson drove in two more runs with a single, followed by an RBI single from Brooke Bishop to give the Purple Knights a 4-2 lead.

  • Maddy Booska walked in the third, advanced to third base, and scored on a groundout by Emma Nordahl to make it 5-2.

  • Booska scored again in the fifth after singling and later coming home on a Saint Anselm error.

  • An insurance run came in the sixth for Saint Michael's when Jenna Devens doubled and pinch runner Kiera Parker scored on another error.

  • Saint Anselm put runners on second and third in the seventh inning but couldn't bring them in, falling 7-2 in game one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1): 

  • This marked the 53rd all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's, with the Purple Knights improving to 9-44 in the series. It was also the third matchup between the two teams this season, with Saint Michael's holding a 2-1 edge over the Hawks. 

  • Maddy Eaton earned the win in the circle, going the full seven innings while allowing just two earned runs on six hits and recording three strikeouts. 

  • Of the seven runs scored by Saint Michael's, only two were earned, with the remaining five coming as a result of fielding errors. 

  • Offensively, Caitlyn Duquette led the Hawks with her first career multi-hit game, collecting two hits. 

  • Brooke Tardugno stole two bases, marking her fourth multi-steal game of the season. She now has 21 stolen bases on the year, just one behind Audrey Arsenault, who recorded her 22nd of the season in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) opened the game with a single and later came around to score the first run on an RBI single from junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.).

  • Arsenault added to the lead in the third, blasting her first home run of the season over the left-center field fence to make it a 2-0 game.

  • Saint Michael's answered in the fourth, beginning with an RBI single from Abreanna Smith before tying the game on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Ella Nickerson.

  • Arsenault responded in a big way, launching her second home run of the game to lead off the fifth and reclaim the lead for the Hawks at 3-2.

  • Sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) shut the door from there, retiring the final seven batters she faced to lock down the complete game win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2): 

  • This was the 54th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Saint Michael's, with the Hawks improving to 45-9 in the series. It also marked the fourth matchup of the season between the two programs, with each team alternating wins across their doubleheaders.

  • Sam Ryan earned the complete game win for Saint Anselm, her 10th of the season, which ranks second in the NE10. She gave up just six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.

  • Audrey Arsenault provided all three runs for the Hawks, launching her first two home runs of the season. It was the program's first multi-home run game by a single player since Bre Klaiber 22' hit two against West Chester in May 2021.

  • Brooke Tardugno swiped two more bases, giving her 23 on the season to take over the team lead. That total ranks third all-time in a single season in program history. Arsenault, who now has 22 steals, is tied for fourth. The team's 66 stolen bases this season rank second all-time for a single season in program history.
