HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Adelphi got out to a 4-0 start after layups by Jarnel Rancy and Tavin Pierre Philippe inside the opening minute of the game.
  • A pair of free throws by junior Juju Ramirez (Lawrence, Kan.) got Saint Anselm on the board, but a three-pointer by Andres Fulgencio made it 7-2, Adelphi.
  • A little over three minutes in, McCarthy got the first field goal of the game to fall for the Hawks while being fouled, and his free throw made it 7-5.
  • Pierre Philippe responded at the other end by knocking down a triple for the Panthers, but freshman Erik Oliver-Bush (Trenton, N.J.) scored a layup on the next possession for the Hawks to make it 10-7.
  • After a midrange jumper by Dayshaun Walton for Adelphi, Saint Anselm cut the deficit to a point courtesy of consecutive baskets by senior Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) and Oliver-Bush.
  • Walton helped his team extend its lead to five points after sinking a couple of free throws and hitting another jumper in the paint.
  • The Hawks quickly tied the score up at 16-16 after Taylor made a layup and McCarthy converted on another and-one opportunity. On the next offensive trip for Saint Anselm, McCarthy gave his team its first lead of the afternoon with a corner three.
  • Layups by Walton and Pierre Philippe along with a couple of defensive stops allowed the Panthers to regain the lead, 21-19, with eight minutes left in the first half.
  • After Ramirez connected on a pair at the free throw line to tie the score at 21-21, Adelphi scored six straight points and forced a timeout by Saint Anselm. Three different players scored for the Panthers on consecutive offensive possessions, which made it a 27-21 game.
  • Taylor ended the run with a driving layup for the Hawks to bring the deficit back down to four points. The two teams then exchanged free throws and with three minutes left in the half, Fulgencio connected from long range to put the Panthers up by seven.
  • Junior Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) helped Saint Anselm close the gap with four straight free throws to trim the margin back down to three points, but Nuha Sagnia canceled that out with four straight points of his own for Adelphi to make it a seven-point game once again.
  • Morissette knocked down a midrange jumper for the final points of the first half, allowing the Hawks to go to the locker room trailing by just five points with the score at 36-31.
  • Saint Anselm started the second half strong after a steal by senior Jadon Archer (Enfield, Conn.) and a layup in transition by McCarthy. A tip-in layup by Ramirez a couple possessions later made it a two-point game.
  • After that bucket by Ramirez, Adelphi held Saint Anselm without a point for nearly four minutes. That allowed the Panthers to generate an 8-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 45-35. Four different players scored during that run for the visitors, all inside the paint.
  • McCarthy provided the Hawks with a much-needed answer. He converted back-to-back shots in the paint to bring his team back to within six points with 14 minutes remaining.
  • At the other end, Matthew Price buried a triple for the Panthers to increase their lead back up to nine points.
  • After the two teams traded free throws, Taylor drove to the rim and finished through contact for the and-one layup. His free throw made it 50-44, Adelphi.
  • Fulgencio responded for the visitors with a jumper in the paint and on their next offensive possession, Pierre Philippe finished an and-one layup. That gave the Panthers an 11-point lead, their largest of the game to that point, with the score at 55-44 and 11:25 to play.
  • Over the next few minutes, the Hawks rattled off an 8-0 scoring run to pull back within three points. Ramirez made two shots in a row with a layup and a three-pointer, and Taylor followed that up with another and-one bucket to get the home team right back into the game.
  • Saint Anselm and Adelphi traded points over the next couple of possessions after both teams made layups and got to the foul line. With 8:35 remaining, Ramirez cashed in from long distance for the Hawks, which tied the score at 59-59.
  • The Panthers bounced back once again, this time with an 11-0 run to jump back in front, 70-59. Fulgencio scored the first five points for his team during that sequence and also ended the run with a driving layup.
  • A free throw by McCarthy helped end the run for Saint Anselm. Morissette followed that up with his first three-pointer of the game and the Hawks trailed by seven with 5:33 left.
  • At the other end, Walton got his offense going with a three of his own and Pierre Philippe made a pair at the line to put Adelphi ahead by a dozen.
  • The Hawks attempted to cut into the lead after layups by Ramirez and McCarthy, but Pierre Philippe countered with a layup of his own and Patrick Burke got open on the inside and through down a slam dunk for the Panthers.
  • With under three minutes left, Walton sank another midrange jumper. Pierre Philippe added four free throws to put the visitors ahead by 15 points. Adelphi closed the game on a 10-4 run and ultimately ran away with the 87-72 road win.
