HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks scored first in Tuesday's nights Northeast-10 conference matchup as Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) got to the rim in the opening minute. The home team would apply full court pressure and initially force a turnover, but Saint Anselm would quickly pick apart the pressure exploding to a 12-3 lead halfway through the first quarter. Sharp shooting from the Owls would bring them back into the game 14-12 with just under three minutes left to play in the first. A pair of buckets from Forbes gave the Hawks a 23-18 lead after one quarter.
  • In the second quarter the home team would go on a counter run taking their first lead of the game on a good layup from Delaney Haines, 26-25. Halfway through the quarter a fast-paced feed from Anna Nelson (Gorham, Maine) would give Forbes an open look to keep the Hawks within one. The pressure would cause some problems for Saint Anselm as the Owls extended their lead to 36-29 before a made triple from Addisen Sulikowski (Saco, Maine) brought the game to 36-32 going into halftime.
  • Sulikowski opened scoring in the second half with a backdoor lay-up feed from Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.). With 7:38 remaining in the quarter senior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) scored a hook shot from teammate Elise MacNair (Old Orchard Beach, Maine). Halfway through the quarter the teams would exchange buckets as Williamson got to the rack for the Owls and Forbes scored a smooth turnaround just outside of the paint leaving the score at 44-41 Southern Conn. St. The home team extended their lead to 55-46 as they would earn a couple trips to the charity strip and convert. The third quarter would come to a close in favor of the Owls giving them a 58-50 lead going into the final 10-minutes of play.
  • Lemanski kick-started the Saint Anselm offensive strike in the fourth quarter on a feed from Hoyt in the paint and another solo drive one possession later. A pair of free throws from Nelson halfway through the final 10-minutes kept the Hawks within six but a response from Haines kept the eight-point cushion alive for the home team. The duo of Nelson and Lemanski would answer for Saint Anselm bringing them within four with just under one minute remaining in regulation. With 33-seconds left to play Sulikowski stepped up and drained a huge three for the team putting them within one possession. Hope Fox would give the Owls a three-point advantage with 30-seconds to go. A late turnover from Saint Anselm would seem to give the Owls their victory, but an unsuccessful trip to the charity stripe for Haines left four seconds to go, and possession in favor of the Hawks. Queue in Captain Clutch Lemanski who stepped up and drained the triple needed to force the overtime period.
  • In the five-minute overtime period Saint Anselm would hit first as Sulikowski notched two makes at the free throw line, which would met by Haines at the other end of the court. Back-to-back lays for Lemanski give the Hawks a 77-73 lead with 1:46 left to play. Southern Connecticut St. brought the game back within one possession but a clutch steal from Forbes switched the momentum. A pair of made free throws from Sulikowski sealed the Saint Anselm 80-75 comeback victory.
