GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Freshman
Breanna Shorey played the hero for the No. 9 nationally-ranked, and No. 3-seeded Saint Anselm College field hockey team as she buried a goal 3:19 into the second overtime period on Friday night at Motamed Field to push the Hawks past Adelphi University, 1-0, and into the Northeast 10 Conference Championship game.
The Hawks avenged a 1-0 loss in the regular season to the Panthers, which came back on back on Oct. 4, to return to the conference title match for the third consecutive year.
Highlights
- Shorey scored the game's only goal, coming after 73 minutes of action. This marked the freshman's seventh goal of her rookie campaign.
- Fellow freshman Audrey Payeur was credited the assist on the game-winning goal. She also assisted on the Hawks' game-winner in double OT against Bentley University (Oct. 22).
- Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wehrum made nine stops in her 13th victory of the season, and the ninth shutout on the campaign.
- The Hawks were outshot, 22-15, with Saint Anselm getting edged in shots on goal, 9-8.
- Saint Anselm owned the advantage on penalty corners, 8-4.
How it Happened
After a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation, the game was sent to overtime. The Hawks controlled most of the opening minutes of the first overtime, with two corners and seven shots in the opening 3:27. The Panthers threatened late, as junior goalkeeper
Mackenzie Wehrum made three saves to keep the game deadlocked.
In the second overtime, freshman
Audrey Payeur sent a centering pass to her classmate, Shorey, who angled a shot past the Panthers' goalie as she was falling to seal the victory.

The Hawks will host the NE10 Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Grappone Field against fourth-seeded Bentley University at noon.
