How it Happened
The Hawks faced adversity early, being out shot 14-8 when Assumption logged the first goal of the game to put the Greyhounds up 1-0 slightly past the 11-minute mark of the first period. At the conclusion of the first period, the Hawks were outshot 27-17
The energy shifted at the start of the second period as senior Brooklyn Schneiderhan took a feed from classmate and co-captain Cora Webber and rifled a shot in the top-left corner to tie the game up at 1-1.
For the rest of the second period and most of the third, the game remained locked up at 1-1 despite both teams getting quality shots on net. The Hawks had reversed the tide in the faceoff battle, winning 25 to Assumption's 13 by the end of period two, but were lagging behind in shots on goal 26-14.
With only 2:30 remaining in regulation, freshman Grace Stirling won a faceoff in the Assumption zone and cut directly in front of the net. She then dove at a rebound and sent a backhanded shot into the back of the net, giving Saint Anselm its first lead late in the third.
The Hawks would hold on for the rest of regulation, which included time defending a 6-on-5 situation with the Hounds' goalie pulled, to fend off a late offensive flurry from the Greyhounds and secure a 2-1 victory and a weekend sweep.
