How it Happened
The first quarter proved to be uneventful as both sides were unable to register a corner or a shot in the opening 15 minutes.
Saint Anselm was able to take the first shot of the game 41 seconds into the second quarter as sophomore Meghan Carey was denied by a defensive save by Bentley's Mia Gallinelli. With under seven minutes to play before halftime, the Hawks earned their first penalty corner opportunity, and fired two shots which were kept out by a save and defensive save. The Hawks' second corner try of the half ended with a blocked shot off the stick of sophomore Kelly Holmes, as the score remained deadlocked at the half.
The Hawks outshot the Falcons 9-0 in the third as a trio of defensive saves by Bentley's Avery Frommer kept the Hawks off the board in the first minute of the second half. Three minutes later, a save and defensive save for Bentley once again kept Saint Anselm's offense from the back of the net. After the Falcons were handed out their first green card of the contest with 1:54 left in the quarter, Saint Anselm tried to take advantage of the player advantage, taking two shots following two corners which were both blocked.
The Hawks came out hot in the fourth quarter, forcing Annie Lorenz to make three saves in the opening 4:21 of the frame. Bentley's offense got into a groove following a green card being assessed to Saint Anselm sophomore Ruby Reid, notching four consecutive penalty corners in the span of 24 seconds. Minutes later, Saint Anselm returned the pressure with three corners over 36 seconds, with the second of two shots in that span being stopped by Frommer's fourth and final defensive save of the outing. Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wehrum came up clutch, making her first and only save of the game with 2:10 to play on a corner bid by Bentley.
Saint Anselm posted the lone opportunity of the first overtime period, as freshman Audrey Payeur's shot was blocked.
The Hawks' offense got back to work early in the second overtime, earning a corner just 35 seconds in. After a shot by senior Millie Forster was blocked aside, Payeur slid a pass from the edge of the shooting circle towards the penalty spot for Carey whose turnaround shot beat Lorenz to seal the victory.
