SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team is set to compete in the Women's Ice Breaker Tournament, hosted by Union College, this Friday and Saturday at the brand-new M&T Bank Center.
Established by the Hockey Commissioners Association, the tournament celebrates the start of the National Collegiate women's ice hockey season and carries an. NCAA exemption permitting teams to play two games beyond the 34-game limit.
Saint Anselm will open play against host Union (N.Y.) at 3:37 p.m. on Friday, just after the matchup between the University of Vermont and the University of Wisconsin, ranked No. 1 nationally, at 12:07 p.m. The tournament's consolation game is set for 12:07 p.m. on Saturday, with the championship scheduled for 3:37 p.m.
The New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) is represented in the Ice Breaker Tournament for the third straight year, following Sacred Heart in 2023 and Stonehill in 2024. Sacred Heart fell to Lindenwood (Mo.), 4-2, before dropping the consolation game to Northeastern, 4-1. Last season, Stonehill suffered losses to No. 2 Ohio State (11-0) and Penn State (11-1).
Saint Anselm enters the weekend slate with a 3-2-0 overall record and a perfect 3-0-0 mark against NEWHA competition. The team swept Saint Michael's College in its opening weekend at Sullivan Arena before securing another home victory last Saturday against Stonehill College. The Hawks two losses have come against Hockey East Association opponents Boston College (4-1) and the University of Maine (3-0).
In last week's games, freshman goaltender Kayla Czukoski recorded 89 saves on 93 shots (.957), earning her third consecutive NEWHA Goaltender of the Week honor. Following the tournament, the Hawks will return to NEWHA play on Friday, Oct. 24 for a road matchup at Stonehill. Faceoff from Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Mass. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
