HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Archer dropped in the first points of the game with a layup off the window a little more than a minute in. Senior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) followed that up with a layup on the next possession and junior Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) then sunk a pair at the foul line as the Hawks took an early 6-0 lead.
  • Saint Anselm held New Haven scoreless for the first 3:17 of the game. The Chargers missed their first five shot attempts, but Seth Sharif-Brown got them on the board with an and-one layup at the 16:43 mark to make it 6-3.
  • The Hawks answered with another 6-0 run to increase their lead to 12-3. Freshman Erik Oliver-Bush (Trenton, N.J.) buried a triple during that sequence for the visitors.
  • Over the next few minutes, New Haven started to attack the basket. The Chargers made two close range shots and nailed four free throws to trim the margin down to 15-11 with 11:47 left in the first half.
  • The Saint Anselm defense put the clamps after that, holding their opposition without a field goal for over three minutes. That allowed the Hawks to pump their lead up to 21-11 after layups made by McCarthy, Morissette, and redshirt freshman Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.)
  • New Haven did not go away easy and soon began to click on offense. Jah'Likai King and Mohamed Traore knocked down threes on consecutive possessions for the Chargers, who made it a two-point game with seven minutes left in the half.
  • Oliver-Bush took matters into his own hands at the other end for the Hawks by connecting from long range, but five quick points by the Chargers including a triple by Ethan Simmon tied things up at 25 apiece.
  • The two teams traded points over the final few minutes of the half. Simmon knocked down another three and King knocked down a midrange jumper for the Chargers, who took two separate one-point leads. Those did not last long, however, as junior Juju Ramirez (Lawrence, Kan.) struck from distance for the Hawks and Oliver-Bush cashed in from midrange to tie the score at 33-33 before the halftime horn.
  • Morissette and Ramirez each sank shots in the paint to give Saint Anselm a four-point lead to open the second half.
  • A few minutes later, the Hawks ripped off a 12-4 run which made it a 50-40 game. That run saw four different players score for the visitors, including Morissette who buried two triples.
  • Traore ended the drought for New Haven by hitting a much-needed three pointer, but Morissette quickly countered with his third three of the half to keep the Saint Anselm lead at 10 points with 12 minutes remaining.
  • After a flurry of layups by both sides, Oliver-Bush gave the Hawks their largest lead of the night with a jumper in the paint that made it 60-47. Joj Lingisi-Ombongo responded with a three to keep the Chargers within striking distance and down by 10 points.
  • With a little over seven minutes left, King made a clutch and-one for the Chargers. That was followed up by consecutive layups by Sharif-Brown, which cut the deficit back down to single digits with the score at 64-57.
  • Simmon then produced a huge bucket in transition while being fouled for New Haven. His made free throw made it 67-62 and after a defensive stop, Simmon connected on another bucket in the paint to make it a one-possession game with 3:39 remaining.
  • Three points is the closest the Chargers got as the Hawks closed the game on a 9-3 run. Only two field goals were made in the final three minutes, but Saint Anselm was dynamite at the free throw line and sealed the win by going 7-8 at the stripe.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The two sides ran into a little bit of trouble at the free throw line as well with Saint Anselm going 16 for 26 (61.5 percent) and New Haven going 13 for 20 (65.0 percent).
  • The Hawks maintained a slight advantage on the glass and out-rebounded the Chargers, 43-38. They also out-rebounded their counterparts on the offensive boards, 9-8.

  • Eight players recorded at least one made basket for the Chargers. The Hawks saw seven players finish with one or more field goal. New Haven's bench outscored the Saint Anselm reserves, 22-4.
  • The game featured four ties and four lead changes. The game was tied up at halftime, but Saint Anselm did not trail in the second half and led by as many as 13 points.
  • The Hawks recorded 13 points off of 10 Chargers turnovers. The Chargers totaled only four points off of eight Hawks giveaways.
  • Defensively, Saint Anselm recorded three blocks and seven steals, while New Haven tallied two blocks and three steals.
  • Assist numbers were low with Saint Anselm posting nine assists on their 27 made field goals and New Haven collecting only six assists on their 24 made field goals.
  • Morissette led Saint Anselm with a game-high 21 points (6-16 FG, 3-12 3PT, 6-8 FT). It was his 11th game of the season posting 10 or more points and his fifth straight.
  • The Hawks saw four other players finish with double figures in the scoring column, including Oliver-Bush who had 16 points (6-10 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-3 FT) and Ramirez who had 14 points (5-12 FG, 1-2 3PT, 3-6 FT) and nine rebounds.
  • Archer and McCarthy each registered a double-double for Saint Anselm. Archer totaled 10 points (3-5 FG, 4-5 FT) and 12 rebounds, while McCarthy finished with 11 points (5-11 FG, 1-4 FT) and 12 boards. For Archer, it was the first double-double of his collegiate career. For McCarthy, it was his eighth double-double of the season, third in the last four games, and the 19th of his career.
  • The Chargers were led by Simmon who posted a team-high 19 points (6-16 FG, 2-8 3PT, 5-7 FT) and seven rebounds. The Chargers also had six players record five or more rebounds in the contest.
  • This marked the 37th all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm improves to 26-11 overall against New Haven in the series that began in 1984.
