HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A disconnect in the defensive line resulted in an own goal that put the Hawks down by one just over two minutes into the match.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Warner (Saugus, Mass.) made her first save of the afternoon for the Hawks a little more than 10 minutes in, denying a shot by Eagles midfielder Jordyn Calas.
- Saint Anselm responded nicely in the 14th minute. Senior Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.) played a through ball in behind to senior Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.), who made a darting run past the Post back line. After collecting the pass, Pecor dribbled around the Eagles goalkeeper and scored into the empty net to tie up the score at 1-1.
- With just over 20 minutes left in the first half, sophomore Daniella Atherton (Milford, Mass.) made her way down the left wing and got by a defender. She crossed into the box and the ball found junior Emma Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass.), but her shot missed high for the Hawks.
- A few minutes after that, Atherton got back down the left flank, cut in to her right foot, and blasted a shot, but her attempt was just over the cross bar.
- The Hawks maintained their offensive pressure, resulting in another chance down the left side. In the 30th minute, junior Zarina Pinto (Groveland, Mass.) made her way into the box and fired a left-footed shot across the face of goal. It took a deflection and eventually found DiGilio at the back post, who tapped it across the goal line to give Saint Anselm a 2-1 lead. Pinto and senior Allison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) each picked up an assist on the play.
- Saint Anselm looked to open the flood gates late in the opening half with four consecutive shots on goal in the final dozen minutes. The first three were saved by Post goalkeeper Aryn Nisbet, but with just three and a half minutes before halftime, junior Nina Muir (Southington, Conn.) got on the scoreboard. The Bryant University transfer controlled the ball on the right touchline before she audaciously chipped a long distance shot that floated up and over Nisbet and into the far post top corner to make it a 3-1 Hawks lead, which they held at the break. The strike marked the first career goal for Muir.
- Post got one back a little over three minutes into the second half with Anna Eicke scoring her first of the season to help the Eagles pull within a goal.
- Saint Anselm regained control of the match shortly after conceding, which resulted in five straight shot attempts in a five minute window.
- In the 55th minute, the Hawks increased their lead back up to two when junior Gabrielle Chisholm (Danvers, Mass.) served a dangerous ball into the box. Pecor flicked it on to DiGilio, who was all alone on the back post and one-timed it into the goal, which made it a 4-2 score.
- The Hawks continued their dominance in the last segment of the game, outshooting the Eagles 11-2 to go along with a couple of corner kicks. However, it was Post who scored the game's seventh goal to make it 4-3. Alyanna Beaudoin, who graduated from Saint Anselm last spring, headed home a corner for the Eagles with just over two minutes left.
- Saint Anselm was able to see out the final two minutes and hold on for the 4-3 win in their season opener.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saint Anselm held a massive advantage in both shots and shots on goal. The Hawks outshot the Eagles, 30-4, and also held a 13-3 edge in shots on goal.
- Saint Anselm had seven corner kicks in the match, while Post had four. Fouls were deadlocked at a dozen apiece.
- DiGilio recorded the first multi-goal game of her career and is the early season-leader for the Hawks. She now has seven goals for her career.
- Pecor notched a multi-point outing as well with a goal, the 12th of her career, and an assist. Muir scored her first collegiate goal in her first game for Saint Anselm after coming in from Bryant.
- Seven Hawks were credited with assists in the match. Beaudoin and Eicke recorded a goal and an assist each for Post.
- Warner picked up the win in net for the Hawks, making one save and allowing three goals. Nisbet made nine stops between the pipes for the Eagles and allowed all four goals.
- This marked the second all-time meeting between these two programs. The Hawks are now 2-0 against the Eagles in the series with wins in 2019 and 2024.
