HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The match began with each side earning two consecutive corner kicks. After Saint Anselm failed to find the back of the net on both of theirs, Adelphi opened the scoring following their second corner with Sarah Kent finishing off a cross from Sarah Winnegar to make it 1-0, Panthers.
  • The Hawks responded in the 11th minute as senior Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) was taken down in the penalty box. DiGilio stepped up to take the penalty kick and finished into the bottom right corner to tie it at 1-1.
  • Adelphi began to create more scoring opportunities throughout the first half. Lola Kochanskyj fired two shots on goal for the Panthers. Madison Apicella and Kayleigh Goodrich also put shots on frame for the visitors, but Saint Anselm freshman goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski (Woodbury, Minn.) made saves on all four attempts to keep the game tied.
  • At the other end, Pecor and sophomore Camryn Doyle (Norton, Mass.) each had shots saved by Panthers goalkeeper Peyton DeRouen.
  • In the 38th minute, Adelphi pulled ahead thanks to a goal by Apicella. The forward collected a pass 10 yards outside the box and ripped a shot that beat Swidorski high to make it 2-1, which was the score at halftime.
  • Early in the second half, senior Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) served a dangerous ball into the box for Saint Anselm that found Pecor, but her header from the top of the six-yard box was saved by DeRouen.
  • Adelphi created another good scoring chance in the 58th minute. Dylann Trahey dribbled into the box and was clear of the Saint Anselm defense, but Swidorski was able to make the save on her close-range attempt. Swidorski stopped another shot from Trahey in the 69th minute to keep her team down by just a goal.
  • With about six minutes to play in the game, Pecor got hold of a bouncing ball in the Panthers box, but her left-footed volley was corralled once again by DeRouen.
  • In the 87th minute, DiGilio made a crafty move and got past her defender on the end line. Her centering pass found fifth-year senior Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.), whose shot bounced into the hands of DeRouen.
  • McCleary nearly headed home the equalizer off a corner kick with two minutes remaining, but the ball was cleared off the goal line by an Adelphi defender. The Panthers were able to run out the final seconds and held on for the win.
