Women's Volleyball Falls in Both Matches on Saturday

QUEENS, NY – The Hawks fell in both matches on Saturday despite pushing both into five and four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Pittsburgh at Johnstown 25-21, 15-25, 21-25, 25-22, 6-15 final)
  • Pittsburgh at Johnstown (Pitt-J) started with an early lead, 4-2, after a pair of kills but the Hawks would go on to trade points will kills from Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia). Midway through the set the Mountain Cats would take a 18-9 lead off of kills from Caroline Knight and service aces from Jessica Krug. Frano would continue to keep the Hawks within reach finding a pair of kills accompanied with service aces from Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.). Saint Anselm would finish the set in the winning column with a final kill from Taylor Lacerda (Franklin, Mass.)
  • The battle would continue into the second set with the teams exchanging points. The first lead would come from Pitt-J who would go on a seven-point run with six kills from three different team members. Saint Anselm would put an end to this run with a block from Hannah Storm (Swansea, Mass.) and Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, RI). The Mountain Cats would not look back for the remainder of the set taking a 25-15 win.
  • The Mountain Cats would continue their roll into the third set scoring the first five points off of a combination of errors and strong swings. The Hawks would fight their way back into the set with three kills from Kocak bringing the score to 10-13. Saint Anselm would go on to tie the score at 16s with a kill from libero Madeline Burke (Lake George, N.Y.). Pitt-J would finalize their win with four straight service aces.
  • The Hawks would keep the match alive in the fourth earning a 25-22 win. Throughout the entirety of the set the teams would continue to exchange points back and forth, until the 23rd point of the set. Kocak would take the team on her back and finalize the win with back-to-back kills.
  • The fifth set would be dominated by the Mountain Cats taking a quick 10-4 lead off of aggressive serving and kills from Brooke Pelloni and Lualis Alvarado. The Hawks would find their final points of the match off of a pair of errors from the Pitt-J squad. A final service ace from Krug would seal the win for the Mountain Cats.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • On the offensive front Frano would lead the squad with 19 kills, a service ace, and nine digs. Kocak would tally 12 kills paired with two blocks.
  • Defensively Burke notched 22 digs to go alongside a kill, and a service ace.
  • Pila would fill the stat sheet for the Hawks with six kills, 14 assists, two blocks and 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Queens 13-25, 26-24, 21-25, 20-25 final.)
  • The home team would make a statement in their first set against the Hawks on Saturday taking a 19-11 point lead off of a combination of errors and strong swings. Saint Anselm would find their footing behind kills from Kocak and Lacerda before Queens would finalize their first win off of three service aces.
  • The second set would prove to be a battle for both teams as they would exchange points throughout the entirety of the set. The teams would limit errors and take advantage of huge swings from Frano and Lacerda. In the latter half of the set the Hawks would find breathing room off of both an attacking error and dominant kill from Frano.
  • The battle would continue into the third set with Queens taking an early 7-3 lead off of errors from the Hawks. Saint Anselm would bring the score within two points with kills from Kocak and Frano. Queens would go on to take a 22-15 advantage with the Hawks struggling to receive their swings. Burdier would continue her serving scheme tallying two back-to-back service aces bringing the Hawks back to within three. Queens would bring the close to the set with a pair of kills from Kendall Conrad.
  • In the final set of the day Queens would take a 9-3 advantage early. The Hawks would continue to have success in service with Frano notching two quick service aces bringing the set within three points. The home team would attempt to pull away but another pair of service aces from Burdier would tie the game at 15s. The Queens squad would go on a late run to end the set with a 25-20 final.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Frano lead the offensive attack with 19 kills, five service aces, and six digs. While Madeline Burke (Lake George, N.Y.) held down the court defensively tabbing 20 digs.
  • As a team the Hawks grabbed 37 kills, 15 service aces, and 62 digs.
