HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • Assumption posted three runs in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds brought one run home on a sacrifice flyout, another on an RBI groundout, and one more score on an RBI double by Christopher Rabias.
  • Trailing 3-0 before ever stepping to the plate, the Hawks quickly tied the score in the bottom half of the first. Senior Zack Clough Newbury, Mass.) got aboard after a fielding error by the Greyhounds and freshman Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) walked to put two men on base. Elmore then stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run shot over the left-center field fence to knot the score at 3-3.
  • The visitors quickly regained the lead in the top of the second thanks to a two-run blast by Lorenzo Lombardo, putting Assumption back in front, 5-3.
  • In the bottom of the second, Saint Anselm put two runners on base again after back-to-back singles by Michaelson and freshman Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.). However, a pop out and a strikeout ended the inning.
  • Hawks senior starting pitcher Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) started to get things going on the mound, forcing a one-two-three inning in the top of the third before striking out a pair in the top of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Anselm took their first lead of the game. With one out, Brune and Clough notched consecutive singles with Brune advancing to third on Clough's base hit. The tandem then pulled off a double steal on the base paths with Clough reaching second and Brune snagging home to make it 5-4.
  • With a man on second and two outs in the same inning, Elmore tied it up with an RBI double to make it 5-5. Freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) then brought Elmore home with a single to left, giving the Hawks a 6-5 advantage.
  • Assumption loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but after hitting two batters, Vaughan got out of the jam by fanning Enger Paulino to keep his team in front by a run.

Sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) led off the frame with a single and sophomore Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) then singled down the right field line, but two errors on the same play allowed Howrigan to touch home and make it 10-5.
  • Hunter faced a bases loaded situation with two outs in the top of the eighth, but got out of trouble after forcing a flyout to center.
  • A solo home run by Lombardo in the ninth was the last of the scoring for the Greyhounds as junior pitcher Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) collected the final three outs to give the Hawks the victory.
