HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game began as a pitching duel with neither team registering a hit in the opening two innings of play. Hicks, making her 23rd start on the rubber for Saint Anselm, struck out a pair of batters in the first inning followed by her third to retire the side in bottom of the second.
  • Shortly after freshman Katie Tournas (Fairfield, Conn.) walked to put the first runner on base for the Hawks, junior Ava Caputo (Waterbury, N.Y.) ripped the ball up the middle for the first hit of game in the top of the third. Gisselle Garcia, the 2024 NE10 Pitcher of the Year recipient for Pace, struck out her fourth batter of the day to get out of trouble and end the inning still level at 0-0.
  • After Carolina Iturriaga notched the first hit for the Setters with a single through the left side in the bottom of the third, both teams struggled to get their offenses going for the next three innings. Hicks struck out another two batters with the game remaining in a scoreless deadlock.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Pace put a runner in scoring position thanks to a double by Riley Jenkins, who then advanced to third base on sacrifice bunt. Saint Anselm's defense came up big to putout the next two batters and force the game into extra-innings.
  • After a scoreless eighth inning, the bats came alive for the Hawks in the top of the ninth, kick-started by a single through the right side by senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.). With nobody out, O'Hara then smashed the ball over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run to put Saint Anselm ahead 2-0.
  • Junior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) continued the Hawks offensive momentum with a stand-up double to right-center for her first hit of the afternoon. Freshman Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.) then checked into the game as a pinch runner and advanced to third base on a passed ball with one out. Junior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) brought home Trisket with an RBI single to left-center, giving the Hawks a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
  • Saint Anselm put out the first two batters before Hicks caught a pop-up for the final out to seal the 3-0 victory over Pace and advance to the NE10 Semifinals.
