Softball Advances to NE10 Championship with 1-0 Upset Over Assumption

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College softball team defeated Assumption University, 1-0, in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) Semifinals on Friday afternoon to advance to the Championship game for the fourth time in program history. Sophomore Rose Reitmeyer's (Oxford, Conn.) RBI triple was the difference for the Hawks, who improved to 24-22 overall with the win over the Greyhounds, who closed their season with a 23-14 record.
UP NEXT: 
  • For the fourth time in program history, Saint Anselm will play in the NE10 Championship game against Adelphi University on Saturday, May 4. It is the fourth time in the past five seasons that the Hawks and Panthers have met in the title game, with Saint Anselm winning two of the three previous matchups.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Greyhounds posted the first hit of the day with a double into center field by Heim before senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) struck out her second batter of the game to retire the side in the bottom of the second.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) drilled the ball to left field for a single in the top of the third for the first Hawk hit of the game. Freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) then reached on a fielding error by the Greyhounds to put two runners on base, but Assumption got out of the inning to keep the score level at 0-0.
  • In the top of the fourth, junior Sam Wiberg (Exter, N.H.) ripped the ball to left center for a stand-up double, her first hit of the afternoon. Reitmeyer then sent the ball into right field for an RBi triple to score Wiberg and give Sanit Anselm a 1-0 edge.
  • Junior Ava Caputo (Waterbury, N.Y.) and senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) each reached first base on Assumption errors in the top of the fifth, however, the Greyhounds managed to get out of the inning unscathed as the Hawks stranded two heading into the bottom of the fifth.
  • Assumption posted their second hit of the game off a single from Sheerin to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Hicks got to work for Saint Anselm by striking out the final two batters to keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard.
  • Wiberg produced the only hit in the last two innings of the game with a single through the right side.Hicks recorded her sixth strikeout of the afternoon in the top of the seventh to help Saint Anselm cement the 1-0 upset over No. 2 seeded Assumption and advance to their fourth-ever NE10 Championship game in program history. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm produced the lone run of the game off four hits along with an error while Assumption recorded zero runs, two hits, and three errors.
  • The Hawks posted two extra-base hits featuring a double and a triple in comparison to the Greyhounds with just one double for an extra-base hit. Neither team recorded a stolen base in the contest.
  • Reitmeyer drove in her 28th run of the season to seal the Hawks ticket to the conference championship game with her RBI triple after a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. Wiberg recorded two hits in the game after three at-bats featuring a double and the game-winning run while Wironen tacked on the fourth hit for Saint Anselm.
  • Hicks produced her second shutout performance for the Hawks to earn her 21st win of the season after pitching the entire seven innings. She allowed just two hits in the game along with six strikeouts and zero walks on 78 pitches.
  • This marked the 93rd meeting between these two programs as Saint Anselm improved to 42-51 in the all-time series against Assumption.
  • The championship matchup also marks the fourth time in the last five seasons the Hawks have faced the Panthers in the finals. Saint Anselm holds a 2-1 record against Adelphi in the championship game since their first finals meeting back in 2019.
