Wironen Smashes Two Home Runs as Softball Sweeps New Haven on the Road

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Anselm College softball team swept the University of New Haven on the road featuring two home runs by junior Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.). The Hawks are now 3-5 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) play while the Chargers fall to a 2-11 league record.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • Junior Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) opened the top of the first inning with a single up the middle for the Hawks. After freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) laid down a bunt to reach first base and advance Caputo, sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) lifted the ball to left field for an RBI double to put Saint Anselm up 1-0.
  • Senior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored Calkins with a sacrifice fly to double the Hawks advantage. Junior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) then singled to left field to bring home Reitmeyer to give Saint Anselm a 3-0 edge.
  • Senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.), making her 13th start on the mound, struck out her first batter in the bottom of the first followed by a pop-up to the infield to retire the side. Saint Anselm's bats continued to do damage in the second inning scoring three runs on four hits to take a 6-0 lead. Reitmeyer and Wiberg each tallied an RBI apiece to make it 5-0 before senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded to pull away with a six-run advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, the Hawks cashed in three more runs with highlighted by an RBI double from sophomore Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) and an RBI single by junior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) to make it a 9-0 game.  
  • New Haven tacked on their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth featuring an RBI double from Anderson to make it 9-2. After Ramer doubled to open the top of the sixth, Wironen smashed the ball over the left field fence to seal game one's victory by a final score of 11-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm scored 11 runs off 17 hits while New Haven posted a pair of runs off three hits in game one. The Chargers committed one error in comparison to the Hawks with none.
  • The Hawks recorded five doubles along with a home run by Wironen, her first of the season and fifth in her career, while the Chargers tallied one double.
  • Wironen led the offense with her two RBI homer after going 2-for-4 at the plate ending the game with three RBI, one run, and a double. Wiberg had three hits on four plate appearances to go along with two RBI, one run scored, a stolen base, and a double. 
  • Reitmeyer and Ramer each recorded two hits and two RBI for the Hawks while Arsenault and O'Hara each notched one RBI apiece.
  • Hicks earned her 10th win on the mound, and second in conference play, after pitching the entire game allowing just two earned runs on three hits. She struck out six batters and walked just one after throwing 116 total pitches.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • The Hawks picked up where they left as Caputo doubled to left field to start the second game of the day. Reitmeyer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Caputo and give Saint Anselm the early 1-0 edge. On the mound for the Hawks was junior Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) who struck out two batters to retire the side.
  • Saint Anselm posted two unearned runs in the second inning as both Arsenault and Ramer tagged home on Charger error to extend their lead to 3-0. New Haven responded in the bottom of the second as Thorpe scored unearned to make it 3-1.
  • The Chargers tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-RBI home run by Thorpe. The following inning, New Haven claimed their first lead of the day after Chenet scored on an error to put the home team up 4-3.
  • New Haven kept their offense going in the bottom of the sixth cashing in three runs on three hits to take a 6-3 advantage. In the top of the seventh, the Hawks answered by adding five runs off six hits to regain the lead and make it a one-run game. Wiberg tacked on the first RBI with a double before Ramer also notched an RBI double to make it 5-7.
  • Wironen then stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball for her second homer of the day to tie the score at 7-7. After Arsenault doubled to left field as the go-ahead run, sophomore Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) doubled to right center to score Arsenault and give Saint Anselm the 8-7 lead.
  • Anderson quickly responded for New Haven with a home run to left field to once again even the score up at 8-8. In the top of the eighth, Reitmeyer seized the moment by ripping a home run over deep left center to put the Hawks back ahead 9-8. Hicks punched out the final two batters in the bottom of the eighth to cement the series sweep by a final score of 9-8.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm recorded nine runs off 13 hits with errors while New Haven produced eight runs off nine hits along with two errors.
  • Both teams posted two home runs apiece in game two while the Hawks recorded seven doubles and two stolen bases in comparison to the Chargers with three doubles and one stolen base.
  • Wiberg went 3-for-5 at the plate along with an RBI and two doubles. Reitmeyer produced two hits on four at-bats featuring two RBI, two runs, a double and a home run, her third of the season.
  • Wironen blasted her second homer of the day in game two after going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • DiPippo pitched the opening five innings for the Hawks allowing two earned runs off five hits and striking out two batters. Freshman Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) checked into the game for the sixth inning giving up four earned runs on four hits. Hicks earned her 11th win after pitching the final two innings for the Hawks punching out four batters and allowing zero runs and zero hits.
  • This marked the 36th meeting between these two programs with Saint Anselm now 17-21 in the all-time series. The Hawks improved to 6-2 against the Chargers since the 2021 season with today's 2-0 sweep.
