HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Anselm started out the game scoring seven unanswered goals. Senior Jake Davis (Franklin, Mass.) got the scoring started less than a minute after the opening faceoff. Senior Nick Larsen (Northbourgh, Mass.) scored under a minute later and the Hawks led, 2-0, less than two minutes into the game.
- The scoring stalled out for the next six minutes. The Saint Anselm defense forced two Assumption turnovers and after that, the Greyhounds finally got a pair of shot attempts, but both were denied by Hawks senior goaltender Anthony Kubik (Chicago, Ill.).
- The Hawks then rattled off five more goals between the 6:57 mark and the 2:12 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore Maverick Lyon (Albany, Ore.) finished off the third score of the quarter for Saint Anselm. After fifth-year Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) won the ensuing faceoff, junior Colin Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) fed Nick Larsen for his second just 47 seconds later to make it 4-0.
- Graduate student Ryan Slattery (North Andover) then caused another turnover that led to the second score of the period by Davis at the other end. With 3:50 remaining in the first, Davis fed Noah Larsen for his first goal of the afternoon and after junior Joe Lombardi (Holliston, Mass.) hit the post, Lyon finished off his second score to give Saint Anselm a commanding 7-0 advantage.
- Assumption finally got on the scoreboard with 25 seconds to go in the first. Patrik McGrath scored for the Greyhounds, but the Hawks led, 7-1, going into the second.
- Both teams committed multiple turnovers in the first five minutes of the second, but Mulvey made it an 8-1 game at the 9:00 mark.
- Despite trailing by seven, Assumption scored four of the next five goals to get back within striking distance. Noah Larsen scored his second off another helper from Davis, but Brady McNulty, Sam Maciel, Colby Bailey-Gates, and McGrath all scored for the Greyhounds, the last two of which came in the final 36 seconds of the half.
- The Greyhounds won the opening faceoff to start the second half and scored inside of 30 seconds in. Ryan Bogar scored for Assumption and just like that, the home team trailed by just three goals with the score at 9-6.
- The Hawks responded well by scoring five of the game's next six goals. Sophomore Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.) set up Mulvey for the 10th Saint Anselm score. After a goal by Assumption seven seconds later, Noah Larsen scored twice and fifth-year Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied his first of the game to help the Hawks increase their lead back up to six.
- With 6:04 left in the third, junior Will Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) found the back of the net to make it a 14-7 game, but Assumption then scored two goals in a 48 second span to trim the deficit back down to five.
- Senior Jonathan Holland (Derry, N.H.) helped settle things down in the back end for Saint Anselm, causing a turnover and scooping up a ground ball that led to a transition opportunity for the Hawks. With 55 seconds left in the third, Lyon found Noah Larsen, who scored his fifth goal of the game and Saint Anselm held a 15-9 lead after three quarters.
- The Hawks defense clamped up in the fourth quarter, shutting out the Greyhounds to secure the win. Lombardi and Claflin each picked up a goal in the final quarter to make it 17-9. Fifth-year goaltender Will Davis (Franklin, Mass.) entered the game at the start of the fourth and made four saves to help Saint Anselm hold on for the victory.
