Softball Falls to Assumption in Season Home Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm College softball team fell in their season home opener to Assumption University on Saturday during a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Hawks are now 0-2 in conference play while the Greyhounds improved to a 2-1 league record.

  • Saint Anselm is back on the Hilltop hosting Bentley University for an NE10 doubleheader on Monday, April 1 at the South Athletic Fields. The first game of the doubleheader is set for a 2:00 p.m. start time.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • The Greyhounds took an early 3-0 advantage to open game one featuring a two-RBI double from Sheerin. The Hawks responded in the bottom of the first with junior Ava Caputo ripping the ball to left center for a double.
  • Senior Gracie O'Hara ( ) scored sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) home for the first run before junior Sam Wiberg ( ) tallied an RBI single to bring Caputo home and make it 3-2.
  • After Assumption tacked on another run in the top of the second, the Greyhounds bats continued in the third scoring 11 runs off nine hits to take a commanding 15-2 lead. Kaitlyn Cahill started the top of the fourth with a home run into center field to extend Assumption's advantage to 16-2.
  • Junior Julia Howse (North Reading, Mass.) got the Saint Anselm bats going in the bottom of the fourth with a single to right field. Sophomore Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) loaded the bases up with her bunt single advancing freshman Sarah Cipriani (Woodbury, Conn.) to second and Howse to third. Freshman Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.) cashed in a run scoring Howse on a single to center field followed by an RBI single by Caputo to make it 16-5.
  • Assumption sealed the victory as Abigail Larson posted an RBI single to score Jaiden Tonucci in the top of the fifth inning, taking game one by a final score of 17-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Assumption earned 17 runs off 15 hits in the game and recorded zero errors while Saint Anselm posted five runs on 10 hits with one error.
  • The Greyhounds recorded five stolen bases while Wiberg earned the lone stolen base for the Hawks.
  • Caputo tallied the lone double for the Hawks after going 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and one run. O'Hara, Wiberg, and Trisket each picked up one RBI apiece in game one.
  • Cahill led the Greyhounds at the plate with four RBIs after going 3-for-3 along with a home run, two runs, and a double. Three different Greyhounds picked up three RBIs apiece while Larson tallied the only triple of the game.
  • Hicks picked up the loss after pitching for two innings and allowing 10 earned runs on nine hits and striking out two batters. Freshman Kendra Lee ( ) faced nine batters after throwing in the second inning allowing six earned runs on five hits. Freshman Sam Ryan ( ) finished for the Hawks pitching the final two innings allowing zero earned runs and zero hits.
  • Cote earned the win for Assumption pitching two innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • Assumption cashed in three early runs off four hits to start game two of the day to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lauren Geremia produced an RBI in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the Greyhounds lead to 4-0.
  • O'Hara answered for the Hawks in the bottom of the second by ripping the ball over the left-center fence for the home run and making it a 4-1 game. After a quiet third inning, Assumption added another run late in the fourth inning as Cahill scored on a RBI bunt by Alyssa Johnson.
  • Saint Anselm's bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs off three hits to tie the game up at 5-5. Trisket picked up the RBI after walking with the bases loaded before sophomore Kylie Frank (Hampstead, N.H.) tacked on an RBI single to narrow Assumption's lead to just two runs.
  • Senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) each earned an RBI after being walked with the bases loaded to even the score at 5-5. The Greyhounds quickly responded in the top of the fifth, however, cashing in five runs off three hits to pull away with 10-5 advantage.
  • Mason tallied an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the fifth to score Wiberg and make it 10-6 Greyhounds. Assumption cemented the sweep after scoring three more runs off three hits in the final inning featuring a home run by Allyson Wargo to win game two by a final score of 13-6.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Assumption recorded 17 hits in game two and one error while Saint Anselm produced six runs off seven hits as well as two errors.
  • O'Hara led the Hawks at the plate after going 2-for-2 highlighted by her first home run of the season, her 12th in her career, and one run. Mason went 1-for-3 for the Hawks with a double and one RBI while Frank and Ramer also posted one RBI apiece.
  • Geremia recorded four RBIs in game two for the Greyhounds after going 3-for-4 along with two runs and a double.
  • Junior Sarah DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the loss after pitching four innings and allowing eight earned runs off 11 hits along with a pair of punchouts. Ryan threw the final two innings allowing five earned runs off six hits and posting one strikeout.
