Ferullo's Six Goal Performance Leads No. 21 Women's Lacrosse to Win Over Southern N.H.

HOOKSETT, N.H. - Senior Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) led the nationally-ranked No. 21 Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team to a 16-11 win over crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday during Northeast-10 Conference action. The Hawks are now 3-1 in conference play while the Penmen drop to a 0-2 league record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior goaltender Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) made an early save in the opening minute of the game to deny Eliana Anderson a goal-scoring chance. Freshman Alyssa Hill (Brookline, N.H.) registered the first shot attempt for the Hawks shortly after that ended up going wide of the cage.
  • Senior Isabella Stuzynski (Bedford, Mass.) fired a shot on frame from a free-position attempt, but Southern New Hampshire goaltender Nicole Mirra produced the stop.
  • At the 7:15 mark of the first quarter, the Penmen struck first with a score by Katelyn Hadden from a free-position spot to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Ferullo answered for Saint Anselm about two minutes later with a goal to tie the game up at 1-1. Southern New Hampshire responded by scoring two quick goals to take a 3-1 advantage with four minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Stuzynski then netted her 11th score of the season followed by a goal from senior Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) to once again even the score at 3-3. With 13 seconds left on the clock in the first, Angelina Graziano buried a late goal for the Penmen to take a 4-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • Southern New Hampshire came out strong in the second quarter as Alexis DeLucia ripped a shot that hit the post. After Anderson received a green card at the 10:56 mark, the Hawks offense generated attacking momentum as senior Maggie Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) and freshman Lucy Mawn (Harwich, Mass.) each registered a shot attempt before Stuzynski found the back of the net on the player-advantage to level the score at 4-4.
  • Sant Anselm outshot Southern N.H. by a 5-2 margin as the quarter winded down featuring four saves from Mirra. With under a minute remaining in the first half, Ferullo tallied a goal off the assist from Stuzynski to go up 5-4.
  • Shortly after, Hill notched a goal with junior Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.) picking up the assist to put Saint Anselm up 6-4 at halftime.
  • The Hawks picked up where they left off in the third quarter as Fitzgerald and Sullivan each scored a goal within the opening five minutes of play to take a four-goal lead. The Penmen responded midway through the quarter by netting three consecutive goals to narrow Saint Anselm's lead down to 8-7.
  • Fitzgerald answered for the Hawks, scoring two of the final three goals in the quarter to help Saint Anselm regain a four-goal cushion.
  • Ferullo started the last quarter of the game by scoring her fourth goal off the assist from junior Kendra Sabotka (Rutland, Vt.) at the 13:48 mark. Shortly after, the Hawks continued to extend their lead thanks to a pair of goals from Fitzgerald and another one by Ferullo to make it 15-7 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
  • Southern New Hampshire kept fighting late in the quarter with Skylar Renaud and Katelyn Hadden each adding a goal apiece, but Ferullo notched her sixth goal of the day to bring the score to 16-9. The Penmen tacked on two late scores in the final minute of the contest, but the Hawks sealed the win over their crosstown rivals by a final score of 16-11. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm outshot Southern New Hampshire by a 33-25 margin in the game and held a 24-19 advantage in shots on target. 
  • The Penmen recorded 20 turnovers while the Hawks committed 19 turnovers. Saint Anselm won the ground ball battle, snagging 29 in comparison to Southern New Hampshire with 13. 
  • On draw controls, the Penmen found success winning 17 while the Hawks won 13 in the game.
  • Southern New Hampshire was 3-for-3 on free-position chances while Saint Anselm converted two goals on seven attempts. 
  • Ferullo led the team with six scores for six points, tying her career-high in goals, along with one ground ball. Fitzgerald set a new career-high with her four goals and dished out a pair of assists for six points in the game, also marking a new career-high. Stuzynski and Sullivan each ended the day with two goals while Hill and Sabotka added one score apiece. 
  • Driscoll posted eight saves and allowed 11 goals in the cage for Saint Anselm to earn her fourth win of the season. 
  • This marked the 21st meeting between these two programs with Saint Anselm improving to a 13-8 record in the head-to-head series against Southern New Hampshire
