Baseball Wins Second Game of Doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  Led by a two-hit, three-RBI game from senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.), the Saint Anselm College baseball team picked up a win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University. The Hawks now hold a 8-12 record on the season, while the Owls, who were ranked fifth in latest installment of the NCAA Division II East Region poll, now sit at 13-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • Sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) started game one with a single for Saint Anselm before advancing to second base on a throwing error by the Southern Connecitcut State pitcher. However, the Owls got out of the inning after making a double play to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
  • Junior Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.), making his sixth start on the mound this season for Saint Anselm, gave up just one hit in the bottom of the first, but struck out Jack Drewry to end the inning.
  • After a quiet second inning, freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) came up to bat in the top of the third and brought home Howrigan with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge.
  • In the top fourth inning, the Hawks doubled their lead after an RBI single from sophomore Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) to make it a 2-0 game.
  • The Owls bats came alive in the bottom of fifth inning, tacking on three runs off three hits to go up, 3-2. Southern Connecticut State tallied three doubles in the inning while Chad Fedeli tripled to right field to help the home team take a one-run lead.
  • Saint Anselm quickly answered in the top of the sixth with freshmen Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) and Declan Ryan (Hooksett, N.H.) each posting a single. Sophomore Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) then reached first on an error that scored Brune to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Southern Connecticut State pulled away in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Talavera kickstarted the inning with a solo home run to left field to put the Owls back in the lead. Derrick Jagello notched a two-RBI double followed by another RBI double from Patrick Dillon to extend their advantage to 7-3.
  • The Owls cemented their first conference victory in the bottom of eighth after tacking on two more runs to take game one by a final score of 9-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1): 
  • Southern Connecticut State's nine runs came on 14 hits. The Owls left 11 runners on base and recorded two errors in the game. Saint Anselm finished with three runs on 11 hits. The Hawks left six men on base and did not commit any errors in the field.
  • Harris and Rose each went 2-for-4 at the plate and each posted an RBI for the Hawks. Harris and Elmore both hit a double apiece while Ryan picked up his second career stolen base.
  • Dillon went 3-for-4 at the dish for the Owls with all three hits being doubles to go along with one RBI and one run. Talavera recorded the lone home run of the game after going 1-for-4.
  • Reminder pitched the first four innings for Saint Anselm, allowing three earned runs off seven hits and posting two strikeouts. Freshman Matt Bianculli (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the loss after throwing for two innings, giving up four earned runs off five hits. Freshman Quinn MacDonald (Kennebunkport, Maine) wrapped up the game by pitching the final inning and allowing two earned runs off two hits.
  • Keegan Daigle earned the win for the Owls after pitching five whole innings, allowing three earned runs off nine hits and recording four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • After suffering the loss in game one, Saint Anselm quickly bounced back with a strong first inning in game two. Rose led off with a single and Bourdeau also got aboard with a hit, with Rose advancing to third on an error. With runners on the corners, Elmore singled to left center to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Harris then stepped up to the plate out of the cleanup spot and ripped an RBI double to left-center field to double Saint Anselm's lead and put runners on second and third with nobody out. Ryan brought home Elmore with a sacrifice fly and the Hawks held a 3-0 advantage after the top of the first.
  • In his first collegiate start on the mound for Saint Anselm, freshman Andrew Chenevert (Dracut, Mass.) tossed a scoreless opening two innings to keep his team's three-run lead intact.
  • The Hawks tacked on another run in the top of the third courtesy of an RBI single through the left side by Brune that scored Elmore, making it 4-0.
  • Southern Connecticut State put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Fedeli brought home a run after singling to right and Billy Sullivan brought home another on a sacrifice fly, but Fedeli was caught stealing to end the inning.
  • Saint Anselm responded with two runs of their own in the top half of the fourth to push their lead back up to four runs. The Hawks again put two runners on with nobody out. Rose then sacrificed on a bunt to push the runners to second and third, which paid off as Elmore scored both with an RBI single two batters later to make it a 6-2 game.
  • Chenevert got through the fourth and fifth innings without allowing a hit. He also struck out a batter in each frame as the score remained the same heading into the sixth. The Owls put a runner on base with a single in the bottom of the sixth, but Chenvert made quick work after that, forcing two fly outs to get out of the inning.
  • Junior Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) came on in the top of the seventh to close things out in the shortened second game for Saint Anselm. Betty conceded a leadoff single, but got three straight outs after that to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2): 
  • Saint Anselm's six runs came on nine hits, while Southern Connecticut State's two runs came on five hits. The Hawks left four runners on base and had one error, while the Owls left three runners on and committed three errors.
  • Brune, Elmore, and Harris all had two-hit games for the Hawks. Elmore led the way with three RBIs and two runs scored while Brune, Harris, and Ryan finished with an RBI apiece.
  • Chenevert went six full innings, allowing just four hits and two earned runs. The freshman walked one and struck out three in his first career win on the mound. Betty pitched a full inning in relief, allowing just one hit and no runs.
  • These two games marked the 36th and 37th all-time meetings between these two programs. With the win in game two, Saint Anselm is now 8-29 overall against Southern Connecticut State since 2001.
