11 Hawks Score as No. 21 Women's Lacrosse Defeats American Int'l, 23-6, on the Road

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The nationally-ranked No. 21 Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team defeated American International College by a final score of 23-6 featuring 11 different goal-scorers. The Hawks improved to a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference record with the road win over the Yellow Jackets, who fell to 0-3 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • American International took a quick 1-0 lead thanks to a score by Kathryn Moody in the opening minute of the first quarter. Saint Anselm answered shortly after with senior Alison Ferullo (North Reading, Mass.) netting a goal from the free-position spot to even the game up at 1-1.
  • Yellow Jackets goalie Marissa Long then produced two stops before senior Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals to put the Hawks, ahead 3-1.
  • At the 8:43 mark of the first quarter, senior Isabella Stuzynski (Bedford, N.H.) found the back of the cage off a helper from Sullivan to make it 4-1, Saint Anselm. Stuzynski scored again for the Hawks about a minute later, but the Yellow Jackets posted a score to end the first quarter with Saint Anselm up, 5-2.
  • Saint Anselm started the second quarter with Ferullo scoring her second goal of the day at the 13:30 mark. Junior goalie Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) recorded an early save to deny Moody and keep the Hawks in front by four scores.
  • With under 10 minutes left to go in the half, freshman Alyssa Hill (Brookline, N.H.) added another goal for the Hawks to make it 7-2. Shortly after Moody notched a goal for the Yellow Jackets, Hill answered for Saint Anselm with her second goal off the assist from junior Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.).
  • Late in the second quarter, Sullivan and Stuzynski each netted a goal apiece to give the Hawks a 10-4 advantage at halftime.
  • Rivet started the third quarter with her first goal of the game to extend Saint Anselm's lead to seven goals. Not long after, Sullivan tallied her fourth score of the afternoon to put the Hawks up, 12-4.
  • After Moody secured her hat trick for the Yellow Jackets at the 10:55 mark, Saint Anselm strung together the next six goals of the quarter, highlighted by a pair of scores from sophomore Brianna Fruci (Walpole, Mass.) to give the Hawks a commanding 18-5 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • Junior Jaycie Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) started the fourth quarter with her first collegiate goal to boost Saint Anselm to a 19-5 advantage. Freshman Julia Rowley (Dover, N.H.) tallied her first goal of the game at the 9:00 mark with junior Kendra Sabotka (Rutland, Vt.) picking up the assist to make it 20-5.
  • Gabrielle Walz notched the sixth score for American International before sophomore Charlotte DeLucia (Winchester, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Lucy Davis (Roswell, Ga.) put the finishing touches on the win by tacking on her second goal of the afternoon followed by another score from Rowley to seal Saint Anselm's 23-6 victory on the road.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm outshot American International by a 53-16 margin and posted double-digits in shot attempts in each of the first three quarters of the game. The Hawks also recorded 34 of their shots on target in comparison to the Yellow Jackets with 13 shots on frame.
  • The Yellow Jackets held a 19-13 advantage in draw controls while the Hawks posted 22 caused turnovers and 36 ground balls. Rivet led the team with four caused turnovers and six ground balls along with three draw controls.
  • Driscoll earned the win for Saint Anselm after playing three full quarters in the cage, posting six saves and allowing five goals. Senior Tess Froio (Hull, Mass.) checked into the game for the final quarter and registered one save while allowing just one goal.
  • Long picked up the loss for American International after playing the entire game in net and producing 11 stops while allowing 23 goals.
  • Sullivan earned a season-high nine points after tallying five goals and dishing out four assists. Stuzynski recorded a hat trick along with an assist for four points, her fifth multi-point game so far this season.
  • Six Hawks notched two goals in the road win including Rivet, Ferullo, Hill, Fruci, Davis, and Rowley. DeLucia and junior Abigail Christmas (Elmira, N.Y.) each tallied one goal apiece while Balboni notched her first collegiate score as a Hawk. Hill ended the day with a season-high five points after posting two goals and three assists.
  • This marked the 24th meeting between these two programs with Saint Anselm now holding a 22-2 record in the all-time series.
