Softball Takes Down Salem, 7-3, on Day Four of The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team took down Salem University (WV), 7-3, on Tuesday afternoon during the fourth day of The Spring Games. The Hawks picked up their fourth win of the tournament against the Tigers to improve to a 4-9 overall record.

  • Saint Anselm is back in action as The Spring Games continues on Wednesday, March 13 for another two-game day. The Hawks begin the day against Lake Erie College at 11:15 a.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. tilt versus Northwood University.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI double from Johnson in the top of the first inning. Junior Alyssa Wironen (Endicott, N.Y.) notched the first hit of the game for Saint Anselm with a single, but the Hawks couldn't capitalize heading into the top of the third still down two runs.  
  • Salem tacked on another run in the top of the third inning with an RBI single by Garay to score Chapa and make it a 3-0 game. Senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) struck out her fifth batter of the game in the top of the fourth to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Saint Anselm scored their first run of the game after freshman Caitlyn Duquette (Bedford, N.H.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Wironen. The following inning, sophomore Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) flied out to center field allowing freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) to tag home. Sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) then scored on a Tiger fielding error to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • Saint Anselm sealed their victory in the sixth inning by scoring four runs off four hits. Reitmeyer tallied a two-RBI double that scored Calkins and senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) to give the Hawks a two-run lead.
  • Junior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) checked into the game as a pinch hitter and registered an RBI single to score Reitmeyer, bringing the Hawks advantage to 6-3. Junior Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) picked up her first hit with an RBI single to bring Arsenault home and cement Saint Anselm's 7-3 win over Salem.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm scored seven runs off nine total hits in the game while Salem tallied three runs of five hits. Both teams recorded three errors apiece in the game as well.
  • The Hawks stole seven bases featuring two stolen bases apiece from Calkins and Ramer in comparison to the Tigers with zero stolen bases.
  • Reitmeyer led the Hawks offense going 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a double, and a stolen base. Mason also recorded 2 RBIs for Saint Anselm while Calkins went 2-for-4 tagging home twice in the game.  
  • Johnson recorded 2 RBIs for Salem after going 1-for-3 while Chapa went 2-for-2 at the plate along with two runs.
  • Hicks, making her seventh start of the season, earned her fifth win on the mound after pitching all seven innings and allowing just one earned run off five hits. She threw 109 pitches and struck out seven Tigers in the game after facing 28 batters.
  • This marked the first-ever meeting between these two programs as Saint Anselm takes the first win in the all-time series with today's 7-3 win over Salem.
