WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior
Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) secured her fifth straight win for the Saint Anselm College softball team after defeating Lake Erie College by a final score of 4-3 on Wednesday at The Spring Games. The Hawks were later tripped up by Northwood University, 5-2, in the afternoon to split results on day five of the Florida tournament.
UP NEXT:
- Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, March 15 for another two-game day against Shepard University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Game one versus Shepard is scheduled for a 1:45 p.m. start time.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
- The Hawks took a quick 1-0 edge in the first inning of the game which was kickstarted by a triple from sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) who later scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.). In the next inning for Saint Anselm, freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) brought senior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) with an RBI double to left field to make it 2-0 Hawks.
- Lake Erie's bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Spahr began the inning with a home run to put the Storm on the scoreboard. Powers then notched an RBI single to tie the game before Gillen tagged home to give Storm a 3-2 lead.
- Saint Anselm answered in the top of the fifth as Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) lasered the ball into left field for a double. After Reitmeyer singled to put two runners in scoring position, Arsenault reached home on the throw to even the score again. Tardugno tacked on another run with an RBI single to score Reitmeyer and take back a 4-3 lead.
- Hicks struck out three of the last 10 Storm batters in the final innings of the game to help Saint Anselm secure the 4-3 victory over Lake Erie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saint Anselm held a 6-5 advantage in total hits in the game while Lake Erie produced zero errors in comparison to the Hawks with one error.
- Tardugno tallied a pair of RBIs after going 1-for-3 at the plate for the Hawks while Calkins also went 1-for-3 along with an RBI and a double in the game. Reitmeyer ended game one going 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs.
- Spahr hit the only home run in the game for the Storm after going 1-for-3 at the plate and earning one run.
- Hicks earned her fifth straight win on the mound for Saint Anselm after throwing all seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits. Of the 26 batters she faced, Hicks recorded six strikeouts and gave up zero walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
- Freshman Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) struck out the first three Timberwolves of the game in her fifth start on the rubber for Saint Anselm. Northwood took a 4-0 lead after scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the second inning highlighted by an RBI double from Fuentes.
- For the next three innings, neither team was able to generate any offense as the Hawks registered three hits featuring a double by Arsenault. Fuentes tacked on a late run for Northwood in the top of the sixth to score Cuthrell and make it a 5-0 game.
- Saint Anselm continued to battle in the bottom of the sixth as O'Hara opened the inning with a single down the third base line. Freshman Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) came into the game as a pinch runner for the Hawks and scored on a wild pitch to put Saint Anselm on the scoreboard.
- Shortly after, Calkins brought freshman Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.) home on a ground-out RBI to cut the Timberwolves lead down to three runs. Mutter entered the game in the bottom of the seventh for Northwood and picked up the save after allowing one hit to cement the 5-2 win for the Timberwolves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Both teams produced five hits apiece in the game while the Hawks recorded two errors and the Timberwolves posted zero errors.
- Calkins earned the only RBI in the game for Saint Anselm while both Reitmeyer and Arsenault each tallied a double. O'Hara led the offense after going 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Lee picked up the loss for the Hawks after pitching one inning and allowing four earned runs on three hits while striking out three batters. Freshman Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) threw for the remaining five innings giving up one earned run off two hits along with one strikeout.
