HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After Saint Anselm fired the game's first two shots on goal in the opening minute of the game, Post quickly countered with a few scoring chances of their own, forcing Hawks freshman goaltender Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.) to make three saves in a 30 second span to keep the game scoreless.
  • The teams continued trading shot attempts with both goaltenders standing their ground until Post found of the back of the net just under five minutes into the first period. After earning a power play, Post's Tristan Currie received a cross-ice feed from Caisey Oetelaar and fired a wrist shot past Stagman to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
  • Saint Anselm provided a near immediate response, potting the game-tying goal just over one minute later. Senior Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.) forced a turnover in the Hawks offensive zone and pushed the puck along to Tullo, whose snap shot bounced off a defender and into the back of the net to tie the score, 1-1.
  • The Hawks were buzzing after the goal and spent a lot of time in front of the Eagles cage for the remainder of the first period as a result. The home team fired off the game's next eight shot attempts and held a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal over the final 13 minutes of the first. However, Post goaltender Hannah Saunders did an outstanding job turning aside every Hawks shot after conceding. The Eagles also recorded seven blocks in the opening frame to keep the game tied going into the second.
  • Post seemed to come out of the intermission with a little momentum by winning two faceoffs and forcing Stagman to make two saves early in the period. After that, Saint Anselm once again generated a ton of offensive zone time, which resulted in the Hawks recording nine of the game's next 10 shots on goal, but none got past Saunders.
  • Despite the offensive onslaught by Saint Anselm, Post took the lead 13:07 into the second on a goal by Tymmarie Grom. After the Eagles won an offensive zone faceoff, Maddy Noonan collected the puck along the left wing circle. Her centering pass found Grom in the slot, whose wrister trickled off the glove of Stagman and over the goal line to make it 2-1, Post.
  • Saint Anselm provided another positive response and generated eight more shots on goal after giving up the go-ahead tally, but the Hawks could not find the tying goal and trailed by one heading into the third.
  • The same storyline continued in the final period of regulation with the Hawks outshooting the Eagles by a significant margin. Saunders stood tall throughout the period, denying shot after shot from Saint Anselm. During the final 12:30 of the game, Saint Anselm pumped 14 more shots on goal compared to just three shot attempts by Post, but they could not find the equalizer.
  • The Hawks pulled the goalie for the extra skater with just under two minutes left, but they could not force the game into overtime despite a late frenzy in front of the Eagles goal and Post held on for the 2-1 win to extend the series.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm dominated in the shots on goal category, outshooting Post, 63-19. Post recorded 18 blocked shots in the game compared to four by the Hawks.
  • The battle on the faceoff dot was even with the Hawks holding a slight 28-26 advantage. Senior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) won 13 out of 21 faceoffs, while senior Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) went nine for 19 on draws.
  • Post scored once on their only power play of the game. Saint Anselm did not earn any power play chances in the contest.
  • Stagman made 19 saves on 21 shots faced in goal for the Hawks, while Saunders made 62 saves on 63 shots faced in goal for the Eagles.
  • Tullo netted her first career postseason goal for the Hawks and her fourth of the season. Weber provided the only assist for Saint Anselm, her 12th of the year which is tied for third-most on the team.
  • This marked the 27th meeting between the two programs with Saint Anselm suffering its first ever loss to Post. The Hawks now hold a 26-1-0 all-time record against the Eagles.
