Women's Ice Hockey Has Senior Day Spoiled by Stonehill, 2-1

Box Score MANCHESTER, M. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team had their Senior Day game spoiled by Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon fter falling to the Skyhawks by a final score of 2-1 from the Sullivan Arena. 
 
Before the start of the contest, the Hawks celebrated their nine seniors on the program: Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.), Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass. ), Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.), Claire Kuipers (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Abigail Blair (Grand Island, N.Y.), Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.), Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Gracie Bruno (Needham, Mass.), and Celesta Paolucci (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.).

  • Saint Anselm has locked in the No. 2 spot in the NEWHA standings and will host Post University for a best-of-three series starting on Friday, February 23.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stonehill fired the first shot of the game before Saint Anselm's offense rifled off five consecutive shots featuring four saves from Skyhawks goalie Eve Stone. Freshman goalie Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.) made her first save of the game at the 3:52 mark to deny Maddison Achtyl.
  • Both teams continued to exchange shots crossing the halfway point of the first period. With about seven minutes left to go, Lucie Turcotte stole the puck at the Hawks' blue line and scored on the breakaway to put Stonehill up 1-0. Saint Anselm ended the period outshooting Stonehill by an 8-6 margin, but the Skyhawks would take the one-goal advantage heading into the first intermission.  
  • Stagman produced an early save followed by a block from senior Celesta Paolucci (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) to start the second period of the game. Junior Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) wristed a pair of shots about five minutes into the period forcing a save from Stone.
  • Saint Anselm earned the first power play chance of the game after Grace Parker was whistled for an interference penalty. The Hawks posted two shots with the extra skater however Stonehill was able to fend off the power play to preserve their 1-0 lead at the end of the second period.
  • The Skyhawks got on the attack quickly to start the final period of the game resulting in a score by Kathryn Karo to double their advantage just two minutes into the period. The Hawks fended off a flurry of shots from the Skyhawks before earning two power plays approaching the end of the period.
  • At the 18:23 mark, senior Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass. ) netted a late score off the helper from senior Natalie Tulchinksy (Clifton Park, N.Y.) to make it a 2-1 game. Saint Anselm picked up another power play with under a minute left to go in the contest, but Stonehill would secure the 2-1 win to spoil Saint Anselm on Senior Day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm outshot Stonehill 37-29 in the contest with 36 of the Hawk's shots on target.
  • The Skyhawks posted 13 total blocks in comparison to the Hawks with 11 featuring a team-high from Paolucci with 3 blocks.
  • From the faceoff dot, Saint Anselm won 22-of-38 while Stonehill won just 16 faceoffs in the game.
  • Stonehill killed all four of Saint Anselm's power plays in the game limiting the Hawks to just two shots across the four power plays. The Hawks held the Skyhawks to zero shots during their only power play of the contest.
  • Weber netted her 10th goal of the season with Tulchinsky notching her 21st assists.
  • This marked the ninth meeting between the two programs with Saint Anselm now leading by a 5-4 record in the all-time series.
