LONGWOOD, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team picked up their first win of the 2024 season after defeating Chadron State College, 6-3, on the second day of the Florida Tech Tournament. The Hawks split results with a loss to hosts Florida Tech University in game two by a final score of 5-3.

GAME 1 (CHADRON STATE):
- Saint Anselm made quick work in the first inning by producing four runs off four hits highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) that scored three runs. Tardugno then tagged home on a throwing error to put the Hawks ahead, 4-0, early in the game.
- After a quiet couple of innings, the Hawks bats came alive again in the top of the fourth, posting three hits with junior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) earning an RBI single to make it 5-0.
- In the top of the fifth, Chadron State got on the scoreboard after Jessie Henchenski singled down the left field line to bring in their first run of the day. The Eagles posted two more runs in the following inning off three hits to narrow the Hawks' lead to 5-3.
- Saint Anselm cemented their first victory of the season after freshman Katie Tournas (Fairfield, Conn.) earned her first collegiate RBI on a single up the middle to bring sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) home.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saint Anselm recorded six runs on 10 hits in their first win of the season. Chadron State recorded three runs on 10 hits. Both teams committed three errors apiece in the game.
- Tardugno went 1-for-3 in the game off her 3 RBI triple, her second career triple for Saint Anselm, while Wiberg and Tournas also posted an RBI each in the match-up. Wiberg and junior Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) recorded two hits apiece on the afternoon.
- Senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) picked up her first win of the season after pitching six innings. She allowed three earned runs and nine hits in the game along with five punch outs and zero walks.
- Freshman Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) checked into the last inning for the Hawks, facing four batters and allowing just one hit for her first collegiate save.
- This marked the first ever meeting between these two programs.

GAME 2 (FLORIDA TECH):
- The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the game thanks to an RBI triple from Katie Hogue.
- In the fourth inning, Florida Tech extended their advantage by posting four runs on two hits to make it a 5-0 game.
- The Hawks quickly responded in the top of the fifth inning with freshman Brooke Tardugno (Metheun, Mass.) hitting a line drive to right field to get a runner on base. A single by Caputo later in the inning scored Tardugno and put Saint Anselm on the scoreboard.
- The next batter, junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded, which scored junior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.). Sophomore Kylie Frank (Hampstead, N.H.) then reached first on a fielder's choice that brought freshman Sarah Cipriani (Woodbury, Conn.) to the plate to make it 5-3.
- Neither team was able to generate momentum on offense in the last innings of the game as Florida Tech secured the victory over Saint Anselm by a final score of 5-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Saint Anselm finished with three runs on just four hits, while Florida Tech ended with five runs on six hits. Each team committed one error in the game.
- Caputo went 1-for-4 in the game and posted an RBI, her first of the season, while Stephanie Tardugno also brought in one run after going 1-for-2 at the plate.
- Junior Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) made her season debut in the circle for Saint Anselm, pitching for four innings. She allowed five hits and five earned runs in the game after facing 15 batters.
- Ryan checked into the game to pitch the final two innings for the Hawks, allowing just one hit and zero runs.
- This marked the second all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Florida Tech. The Hawks fall to 0-2 overall against the Panthers.
