HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to back-to-back hits by sophomore Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) and junior Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.), both of which drove in runs off Rollins starter Reese Twiggs.
  • Rollins answered right back in the top half of the third. With two outs, Brie Michelli singled, stole second and then took third on a wild pitch. Ashley Worrell singled to drive in the run, cutting the Hawks' lead to 2-1.
  • Saint Anselm maintained the lead until the sixth inning when Rollins' Kaeli Zahradnik scored after a Emma Gipple triple, pulling the score even at 2-2. Neither team plated runs in the final inning and a half, forcing the game into extras.
  • After a scoreless eighth, the Tars took advantage of a Hawks miscue and plated three runs in the top of the ninth to go in front for the first time in the game, 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, junior Julia Howse (North Reading, Mass.) scored on a groundout by sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.), but that took Saint Anselm down to its final out. Rollins closer Dazha Durand forced the final out and earned the save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm ended the contest with three runs on eight hits and made two errors. Rollins ended with five runs on 13 hits and three errors.
  • Mason, who recorded both her first career hit and multi-hit game, finished the day 3-for-4 and drove in a run. Caputo and junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) each registered a pair of hits, while Caputo drove in a run on a double in the second inning.
  • Senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) suffered the loss, going the full nine innings in the circle. She surrendered 13 hits and five runs, all earned.
  • This marked the second all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Rollins. The Hawks are now 0-2 overall against the Tars.
