HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Adelphi went up 5-0 early in the game after an and-one layup by Jarnel Rancy and another layup by Dayshaun Walton.
  • Junior Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) got Saint Anselm on the board with a fastbreak layup, but Adelphi made two more shots in the paint to extend their lead to 9-2.
  • After a few minutes without scoring, McCarthy and freshman Will Davies (Saco, Maine) scored two points apiece for the Hawks to make it an 11-7 game.
  • The Panthers answered with an 11-0 scoring run to take a 15-point lead. Walton, Al-Fatir Connor, and Andres Fulgencio each knocked down a three during that run.
  • A variety of scorers helped the Hawks trim the deficit back down to 11 points with the score at 24-13, but back-to-back buckets in the paint by Patrick Burke helped the Panthers maintain their 15-point advantage.
  • Redshirt freshman Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) got his offense going with a pair of buckets for the Hawks, but Adelphi outscored Saint Anselm, 9-4, over the final 3:09 of the first half and held a 40-21 lead at halftime.
  • The two sides traded points in the early going of the second half. Freshman Erik Oliver-Bush (Trenton, N.J,) scored seven of the first nine points of the second half for the Hawks, but the Panthers were able to increase their lead to 22 points with the score at 52-30.
  • A few minutes later, Matthew Price buried a three and then converted on a pair at the free throw line for Adelphi to make it 58-33.
  • Morissette responded for Saint Anselm by knocking down a three while being fouled. His four-point play brought it back down to a 21-point deficit for the Hawks with 12 minutes to play.
  • About a minute later, junior Juju Ramirez (Lawrence, Kan.) connected on a triple for the Hawks, but five straight points after that by Mason Jackson including a three pointer gave the Panthers a 67-40 lead midway through the second half.
  • Davies and McCarthy helped Saint Anselm get its offense back in gear with two points each, but Adelphi countered with a 7-0 run to jump ahead by 30 points, their largest lead of the game.
  • Scoring six of the next nine points for the Hawks was McCarthy with two layups and two free throws. Senior Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) connected on a three as well to help trim the margin back down to 23 points, but with under five minutes remaining, it was too little too late.
  • The Panthers scored eight of the game's final 12 points and surged to the 90-63 home victory.
