Saint Anselm Come Back Falls Just Short in Overtime, 4-3

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm Women's Ice Hockey team fell in overtime action against the Long Island Sharks on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first period of play would be a scoreless affair between the two teams. Long Island would find the offensive action first, earning the first pair of shots from Drew Dyczkowski and Anna Fairman. Saint Anselm found their first offensive try from Mackenzie Moss (Victoria, Minn.) who would be turned away by Shark's keeper Abbie Thompson. The Hawks would end the period on the offensive strike, looking to score off of a Nicola Forth (Schwenksville, Pa.) strong rip towards net but strong goaltending from both teams would keep the game scoreless.
  • Long Island found their footing in the second period of play, scoring in the eighth minute of action off of a Bri Eid shot and score at even strength. Saint Anselm would look for a response from Brenna Young (Wilmington, Mass.) but would be unable to stop the bleeding. The Sharks quickly expanded their lead to two goals on another even strength score from Ryane Kearns. Before Saint Anselm could escape the period, the home team extended their lead further, scoring a third goal in a powerplay advantage. Saint Anselm would earn a powerplay advantage but would be unable to break the 3-0 lead.
  • Scoring for Saint Anselm would come to life in the third period as Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) notched the Hawks first goal of the afternoon four minutes into play in the third period. 29-seconds later teammate Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) would bring the game within one score as she skated into an unassisted goal. Saint Anselm would continue to maintain pressure winning back-to-back face offs before in the ninth minute, Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.) would score to tie the game. For the remainder of regulation, the teams would look win the game but would be unable to get past either keeper.
  • Long Island made quick work of the overtime period, scoring just two minutes into action on an upper 90 shot from Grace Babington.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jackson, Donovan, and Schneiderhan each played a hand in the Hawks offensive strike this afternoon – all notching one goal apiece.
  • Long Island out-shot Saint Anselm 60-25 and won the faceoff battle 50-25.
  • The Hawks tallied eight blocked shots while the Sharks grabbed just seven.
  • Ava Hills (Pembroke, N.H.) tabbed the loss allowing four goals and rejecting 56 shots.
