Men's Soccer Concludes Season with Draw at No. 5 Southern New Hampshire

HOOKSETT, N.H. – Senior Samuel Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) scored the game-tying goal in the 86th minute as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against nationally ranked No. 5 Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday night during their regular season finale.

  • Saint Anselm finished the regular season one spot out of the Northeast-10 playoff picture in eighth place due to Saint Michael's beating Bentley to claim the seventh and final spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first half, Southern New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Martin Zapata assisted by Philipp Herrmann.
  • In the 77th minute, Saint Anselm went down a man after a player was sent off with a red card.
  • Despite the disadvantage, the Hawks tied things up with just over four minutes remaining after Assantha scored his first goal of the season off a feed from fifth-year senior Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.).


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Southern New Hampshire held a 25-7 advantage in total shot attempts as well as a 17-6 lead in shots on goal.
  • The Penmen earned 11 corner kicks in the match, while the Hawks finished with one corner.
  • Southern New Hampshire was called for seven fouls, while Saint Anselm was whistled for six fouls. There were two cards issued in the game with the Hawks earning a yellow and a red in the second half.
  • For the Hawks, Assantha scored his first goal of the season and the fifth of his career. Verow collected his team-leading fourth assist of the fall and now has 12 for his career.
  • Junior goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.) made a career-high 16 saves in goal for the Hawks. Preston Neal made five stops in goal for the Penmen.
  • The Penmen goal ended a 315:24 stretch without a goal against the Hawks, with their last goal not coming since 2021.
  • This marked the 50th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire. The Hawks are now 9-34-7 against the Penmen in the series that began in 1977.
  • Saint Anselm is undefeated against Southern New Hampshire in their last three meetings. It is the longest undefeated streak against the Penmen since the 2008 and 2009 seasons when the Hawks earned a win and two ties across three games over that span.
